Checking Student Loans Questions and Answers

Open Question: My sister's student loans are greater than her income. No more forebearances. Can't file bankruptcy. Wut 2 do?

She lives in California. Doesn't have dependents. Her student loans equal up to almost $3000 a month and they're garnishing her check. How can she make it stop (or slow down)?  more

Open Question: what steps do we need to take in order to get preapproved for a mortgage?

My husband and I are looking to buy a 90k townhome. We are young and just married and have a baby coming so that is why we are looking to start with a townhome to have space of our own and move to a bigger place in a few years. I have always had pretty good credit and have never had trouble getting approved for anything. I do have student loans and a credit card though. Also about a 2000 hospital bill I am about to start paying off. In november however I was in the hospital for about a month and due to a coma and complications out of work for about 3 mths so of course some bills went late and I am finishing paying them off now. A few went to collections but most places have said they haven't posted to myy credit yet since I've been paying them off shortly after being called. I do plan on calling the credit office and getting the hospital bstay put on my report to explain anything that might havre made it on there. My husband has no credit. He has a 100 hospital bill he owes on and is paying off this month that is on there as well as several bounced checks that are from when his cb got stolen. We are faxing in his afadavits tom. To get that fixed. I made about 3k a month last year but since I have been back. Have been closer to 2k and my husband mades about 1.5k a month. What can we do to increase the chances of us being approved for a mortgage in the 90k range?  more

Open Question: Will I be able to get health insurance to cover this?

I am about to graduate from college and have not been covered by insurance regularly in many years, for a short time I was on a California county-supported low-income type of insurance program but it automatically runs out every few months if you don't reapply evidently... Anyways, I'm about to graduate and move back to Oregon. I have some kind of hip/tendon injury that I need to go to the doctor for and have checked out...but because I don't have insurance, and this is an old injury already, is there any way I'm going to find health insurance to help me pay for this? Or am I just completely screwed and destined to limp around for the rest of my life??? because there's no forseeable way that I'll be able to afford my own health care any time soon, I'll be paying off my student loans for the next few years. I also doubt that I will be able to find a job that offers health coverage in my field so that's not looking very likely either.  more

Resolved Question: How do people move when they graduate college?

Open Question: Credit history and renting an apartment?

I am one of thousands of students with poor credit. I am trying to move to an apartment which is about $12 more/month than the current place at which I am staying, and I am worried I will not get the apartment. My dad was my guarantor for my current apt, and for lack of finding a better one (I am only allowed a parent or grandparent who makes 3 times the rent/month, dad's the only one), I was forced to go to him again. Problem is, that he has had a student loan default in this time frame, and was wondering if that posed a problem? I have had two late payments this year, one of which occurred during the winter break as the leasing office didn't receive my check. Other than that, I have always made payments on time at every apt I've leased at. What are my chances of not getting approved? It might help to say I'm in Austin, TX.  more

Resolved Question: I just got a $3000 refund from my loans, does this happen often?

Voting Question: What kind of loan can I get?

Let me give you some setup here: I'm in the military til mid-2010.I'm 26. I have about $25,000 in student loan debt left. At the end of 2009, I'll have between $7-10,000 left to pay off. Along with that, I'm looking to get a new/used car early in 2010. Equifax says my credit score is 655. I've got no other debt. I've been with my bank for 5 years, maybe more. I've got a checking account and a visa student credit card with them. The card started with a $500 limit and went up to about $1,500, but after some missed payments, went back down to $500. I've had small overdrafts in the past, but not for the last year at least. I haven't missed a credit card payment in about that long either. I've been late on one or two student loan payments, but I'm not sure how long ago that was. At least 6 months. What I WANT is to get a loan from my bank in early 2010 for whatever I have left on my student loan + the cost of my car. I want to have both consolidated into one payment, so I'd rather include the full amount of what my car will cost instead of just getting a downpayment and paying to 2 lenders at once. If I needed $15,000, what are my chances of getting that? What would help? What is a reasonable loan to expect in my situation? What are some options that I haven't thought of or some better ways to get what I'm after? Any help would be great. Thanks in advance, Joe  more

Resolved Question: Any Libs that actually PAY INCOME TAXES enjoy writing that check to Uncle Sam?

Resolved Question: A Different Take On Blonde Jokes?

A blonde and a lawyer are seated next to each other on a flight from LA to NY. The lawyer asks if she would like to play a fun game? The blonde, tired, just wants to take a nap, politely declines and rolls over to the window to catch a few winks. The lawyer persists and explains that the game is easy and a lot of fun. He explains, "I ask you a question, and if you don't know the answer, you pay me $5.00, and vice versa. " Again, she declines and tries to get some sleep. The lawyer, now agitated, says, "Okay, if you don't know the answer you pay me $5.00, and if I don't know the answer, I will pay you $500.00." This catches the blonde's attention and, figuring there will be no end to this torment unless she plays, agrees to the game. The lawyer asks the first question. "What's the distance from the earth to the moon?" The blonde doesn't say a word, reaches into her purse, pulls out a $5.00 bill and hands it to the lawyer. "Okay" says the lawyer, "your turn." She asks the lawyer, "What goes up a hill with three legs and comes down with four legs?" The lawyer, puzzled, takes out his laptop computer and searches all his references, no answer. He taps into the air phone with his modem and searches the net and the library of congress, no answer. Frustrated, he sends e-mails to all his friends and coworkers, to no avail. After an hour, he wakes the blonde, and hands her $500.00. The blonde says, "Thank you," and turns back to get some more sleep. The lawyer, who is more than a little miffed, wakes the blonde and asks, "Well, what's the answer?" Without a word, the blonde reaches into her purse, hands the lawyer $5.00, and goes back to sleep. And you thought blondes were dumb. Collateral A blonde walks into a bank in New York City and asks for the loan officer. She says she's going to Europe on business for two weeks and needs to borrow $5,000. The bank officer says the bank will need some kind of security for the loan, so the blonde hands over the keys to a new Rolls Royce. The car is parked on the street in front of the bank, she has the title and everything checks out. The bank agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan. The bank's president and its officers all enjoy a good laugh at the blonde for using a $250,000 Rolls as collateral against a $5,000 loan. An employee of the bank then proceeds to drive the Rolls into the bank's underground garage and parks it there. Two weeks later, the blonde returns, repays the $5,000 and the interest, which comes to $15.41. The loan officer says, "Miss, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled. While you were away, we checked you out and found that you are a multimillionai re. What puzzles us is, why would you bother to borrow $5,000?" The blond replies....... .............. ."Where else in New York City can I park my car for two weeks for only $15.41 and expect it to be there when I return?" On the first day of school, the teacher asked the young blonde student what her father did. She said her daddy was a doctor and that he had rushed to the hospital that morning to perform an appendectomy. “My," said the teacher, “that sure is a big word. Do you know what it means?" “Sure do! Fifteen-hundred bucks, and that doesn't include the anesthesiologist!" A blonde driver is pulled over by a patrol car. The officer approached the driver’s door. “Is there a problem, officer?” “You were speeding. Can I see your license please?” “I’d give it to you but I don’t have one.” “You don’t have one?” “I lost it four times for drink driving.” “I see. Can I see your vehicle registration papers please?” “I’m sorry, I can’t do that.” “Why not?” “I stole this car.” “Stole it?” The blonde says, “Yes, and I killed the owner.” At this point the officer is getting stressed. “You what?” “The body is in the trunk. You can look if you want.” The officer slowly backs away and calls for back up. Within minutes, five police cars show up, surrounding the car. A senior officer slowly approached the car, clasping his half drawn gun. The senior officer said, “Could you step out of your vehicle please!” The blonde stepped out of the vehicle. “Is there a problem, officer?” The officer responded, “Yes, could you please open the trunk of your car please?” The blonde opened the trunk, which was empty. The officer said, “Is this your car sir?” The blonde said, “Yes,” and handed over the registration papers. The officer, understandably, is quite stunned. “One of my officers claims that you do not have a driving license.” The blonde handed a license to the officer. The officer examined the license. He looked quite puzzled. “Thank you. One of my officers told me you didn’t have a license, stole this car, and murdered the owner.” The blonde replied, “I bet you that liar told you I was speeding, too!” Gambling Two casino dealers a  more

Resolved Question: How to solve this issue with my husband?

I love my husband very much. He can be very thoughtful- he cooks, cleans, helps me take care of my ailing mother, surprises me with thoughtful gestures like breakfast in bed, etc. He's a great guy. But... We have a problem with the bills. Due to a change in our living situation, we just started paying utility bills-(which we split equally), but when he gets his paycheck, instead of giving me the money he owes, he spends it playing golf and spending $10 on food every day. I then have to cover the bills, and I can't afford to do any of the leisure activities I would like to do, or to pay my credit card bill early, so as not to pay any extra interest on it. He gives me the money he owes me out of his next check, but by then I have already had to pay extra interest on my credit cards, and I'm very upset because I feel that he is being selfish and disrespectful-(and being mad at your spouse is never good for a relationship). We make about the same amount of money, so it's not like either of us have more spare cash than the other. (Actually, I have student loans and credit card debt, so I actually pay out more money each month to bills than he does, and I live off of approximately $1.50 per day in food and drinks). I have told him how I feel, but it doesn't seem to do any good. So I am looking for any ideas on how to fix this situation? Thank you for your help!  more

Voting Question: Need advice on my marriage.?

My husband and I just got married last year. It was just shortly after our son was born that we managed to get together and have a small, legal ceremony. We never really had much money starting out and, I understood this when we moved into our mobile home that we have been remodeling little by little. I do love the man. However, over the past nine months, things have gotten strained, and I think it is just on my end. Or rather, I am the only one that is frustrated. I'm trying to finish up my degree currently and am supposed to graduate next month. So, my husband is the only one working. He only gets 30 hours where he works and about $7.50/hour. If it wasn't for my student loans and our food stamps, we wouldn't be able to continue our life in our home together. I have tried my best to maintain our home while going to school and watching our little one. I did 14 credit hours last semester and am currently working on 16 credit hours to finish my degree. When I'm am out of class, I come home to do all the cleaning: laundry, dishes, picking up the house, trash. I do all the household and grocery shopping, cooking, making sure that our son makes his appointments and maintain our accounts, to include paying all the bills from his checking account. He won't touch the bill payments and gets upset with me if they are not up to date. I don't know what to do at this point. We are already expecting another little one and I have sworn this is the last child I will have. I am worried what is going to happen when I get my degree. I know I need to go straight to work in order for us to keep our home. At this point, I am just frustrated beyond compare and don't know if this relationship is worth trying to work out if he won't even contribute a little bit instead of just coming home and hopping on the computer for all hours of the day. okay, to the one that made the comment that it seems I am the one on the computer, that is because I killed his downloads to be able to get some of my school work done for the moment. However, I am just to a point that I need advice. My ex has been trying to help me out already but, he knows my husband and that he doesn't really listen. We never really talk about stuff anymore. And unless it is stupid stuff, like him creating his own CCG, he won't listen. I doubt that he will ever go to marriage counseling with me due to a comment that he made to me when I was suffering post-partum depression last time. He told me that if I went to a therapist and they put me on meds, he would leave me to be a shriveled vegetable on my own. Guys, I do love him. I have been told by numerous friends that love might not always be enough though. And the whole issue of children. Both were unplanned, I was told that I couldn't have children before our first little one. And yes, I do have a place where I can go should things get bad.  more

Voting Question: Employer checking credit?

I am getting a job at a bank as an accountant and they require a credit check. I dont miss any payments on my credit cards or auto loan but had one charge off in 2006 and its paid. Other than that I have 11 accounts in good standind. Couple of my cards though are maxed out due to paying off my last semester of school (tried to get student loan but due to frozen credit market people with 800 scores cant even cosign and get approved). Question really is with all accounts in good standing, but having a credit score of only 600, will it be possible they will deny me due to high balances on credit cards and a charge off 3 years ago.  more

Voting Question: Student Advocate Office at College Keeps Calling Me??

Last summer, I had some MAJOR issues with the registrar's office at my college. I had my FAFSA completed months in advance and I completed my financial check-in early, but for some reason, they had me on the "late" list and dropped my class schedule. Some of the classes were ones that I had to get signed into (already full classes), which was a pain in the neck. They wouldn't help me, so I got into contact with the student advocate office. They were awesome and had the problem fixed in two days. Now, it's about 8 months later and they've been calling me at least every other week this semester. I don't know why. They keep bothering me about the most random things, like, "Do you need help with your FAFSA?" or "Would you like us to explain student loan options to you?" And I'm like, "No. I'm a senior. I've been doing this for four years now, by myself. I can handle it." and they keep calling me. It's a different phone number every time, so I always answer my phone in case it's an important call. What should I say to get them to stop?  more

Voting Question: I got a student loan...then received a refund check for the remaining left....?

My question is, since that refund check is from a student loan, and not a pell grant, if i cash the check and keep the cash in my savings....would it affect the interest rate? I dont know if this is a silly question or not, but im not tooo familiar with the way refund checks work. My loan says i dont have to pay anything until after i graduate. Which is 2 years from now...so if i leave the cash sitting in my savings account until an emergency, would that be fine? i would still have to pay back just that amount in 2 years, right? i hope my question makes sense..... i would appreciate any serious help.... Thanks!  more

Resolved Question: Student loans for transportation costs?

Resolved Question: how do you tell your best friend that it's an inconvenience to be her friend? HELP PLEASE!?

i've had this best friend for almost a year, and we are both college students who are surviving off of loans. we don't live together. i am more responsible, i deal with all the money (bills, food, car insurance, etc) by myself. my friend's mother deals with all her money, she gives her a certain amount everyone once in a while, not on a schedule or anything. my friend doesn't have a car. i love my friend so much, i don't want to stop hanging out with her, but the only way to hang out with her would be picking her up and dropping her off at home, and she doesn't live that close. so i waste a lot of gas. another issue is that whenever we used to go out to eat, at first we used to do this: first i would pay for both of us, then the next meal she would pay for both of us. so this kept happening, except for she stopped paying for me. so i've been paying for her food alone. and then she started expecting me to pay for her. i went to the bathroom once, and she told the waitress if was on the same check. and even if i'm there, she would blurt out "same check". i got fed up with it and told her she needs to start paying me back, and she said i will when my mom gives me money. she's been saying that about gas money for the entire time we've known each other and i have yet to see a single dollar. i don't pay for her food, except for recently i told her i would pay for it if she pays me back, which she promised to pay me back in a week. what should i do? i know i shouldn't trust her since she's been saying that for all this time, but i love this girl, and i still want to be her friend, but i'm on loans, i have no income, and this is getting frustrating. help me please!!  more

Resolved Question: Should I invest in this mobile home? $29,000?

I'm 19, in my sophomore year at a community college. I have not taken out any student loans. I work a part-time job, and make about 800 dollars a month. I have had a credit card for 5 months, and have been making more than the minimum payment on it, on time, every month. I was driving through a local mobile home park, checking out prices, and found one for $29,000. It also says to "bring offer," does that mean that I could potentially offer 25,000? It is a three bedroom, two bath, 1440 square foot home. I'm going to call the realtor tomorrow. What specific questions should I ask her? My plan is to take out a $25,000 student loan (I won't have to pay a student loan back until I graduate), and buy the mobile home. I will live in it for about 8 months before transferring to a Cal State. At that time, I will offer it up for rent, and start putting the rent money away for when I need to start paying the loan off. Does this sound foolproof or foolish? The other homes in the park are going for 80 and 90 thousand dollars. And I could advertise it for rent at my college. A ton of college kids would be interested in renting this place out. It IS 30 years old, but it's really nice inside. Former owners have really taken care of it. And there are no large trees around. ;) The space rent and utilities are a bit of a downfall, though. I'll have to ask for specifics on those. And I live in California. You can't even buy a nice used car for 5,000. Billy Cunningham, "stupidest," is not a word. I wasn't saying anything other than that "stupidest," is not a word. I really have listened and taken everything said here into consideration.  more

Resolved Question: What kind of mortgage could I qualify for (if any?)?

My credit score (last I checked through Experian) is 784. My only debt is a car loan for $220 / month. I have a few credit cards that I pay off in full every month. My income is $57,750 annually, and I am up for a raise that could take me to about 60K. I have lived in my current (rented) apartment for over 1.5 years, and have had my current job for 1.5 years as well. I am 28 and have a credit history of at least 10 years. I only have about 10K in liquid savings, but I might be able to borrow a little from family for a down payment. The most I could probably put down would be 20K. My fiancee has very poor credit due to defaulted student loans. He is repairing it, but his numbers are still in the 500's. His income is about 37K annually, so I'm assuming it would make more sense for me to buy something on my own rather than trying to qualify for something together. Any thoughts? I live in the Seattle area, so condos and starter homes are anywhere from 175K - 250K. Hoping I can take advantage of the market right now. Thanks, Lynn Updated - when I said "borrow" from family what I really meant was "ask for a gift". :-) So I think this would be legitimate. Re: the fiancee's credit issues - this has been an issue between us for a while that has improved over time and yes, I still have some doubts (which is another reason for wanting to apply in my name only). Thank you for the answers so far!  more

Resolved Question: what are the usual requirements to get into chapman university?

Resolved Question: Can I obtain a loan without currently working + bad credit ?

Ok... I'm prepared for the flames, cause I definitely have been a financial idiot as of late. But in the past 2 months - I've abused the hell out of my credit cards and have overdrawn my checking account (which is now much worse w/ fees). All total, I need about $2,200 to get back on my feet, because right now I'm really struggling. I've been able to pay the rent this month....but I'm getting quite hungry eating Ramen noodles and cereal. I've been looking hard for work but haven't had any luck. I think I could get something lined up and pay the money (w/ interest) back in about 2 months. I'm a broke college student who made some bad decisions and now is paying for it (or WISH i way paying for it)  more

Resolved Question: can you help me re-word this?

So you have already looked for scholarships, grants, and loans and are still finding it hard to pay your way through college? It goes without saying that the typical college student is either broke or financially hanging in the balance most of the time. We’ve assembled a long list of both practical and creative ways you can save some green while you’re going to campus. 110.Sell your expertise in a subject as a tutor, computer skills, music lessons. 111.Get a job in the food service industry. Chances are high that you can eat for free! 112.Car pool. I know that having a car can make college life easier, but the combined costs of maintenance and gas can be devastating to your wallet. If you can, car pool to stores, class, and parties. Giving a few bucks to another driver is a lot less expensive. Also look for things to do on campus. Most colleges have various events to help keep students entertained, at least for a little while. oOne I'm surprised one they didn't mention: find paid internships in your field of study. You save money by finding out if the real world job is to your liking, possibly get a higher starting salary, and, of course get paid. If it's school-sponsored, all the better. •Before you even think about putting out money for a textbook, don’t you think someone else on campus had to already have one? Borrow if it’s possible. •If you can’t borrow, buy used college textbooks. On sites like Amazon.com used hardcover books are often cheapest. Soft cover are more valued for convenience, so if you’re willing to haul a couple extra ounces, then hardcover is the cost-saving choice. ISBN.nu allows you to easily compare book prices from major online book stores. The campus bookstore will sell a supply of used books, but they are limited; so check the online sources as well. Buy Online You can easily compare textbook prices on different websites. I would recommend checking out half.com first. Just note that some people sell the international version of textbooks in their auctions. Although they are a great value, most bookstores won’t buy back the international edition. Another one of my favorites is ecampus.com. They have a great selection and very competitive prices. Buy only what you need Although I have never bought anything through iChapters.com (it wasn’t around when I went to college), I have heard a lot of great things about it. Students can purchase a full electronic college textbook (a.k.a e-book) for half the price of a new hard copy textbook. You can also choose to buy only the chapters you need for $1.99 per chapter. Factor in the cost of printing pages before you buy your e-book though, unless you plan on reading it straight off your computer. If you are buying new, check for an “international” edition. The book will be almost exactly the same, except for maybe some Chinese characters on the front, AND it will be exponentially cheaper. Put yourself on an allowance for things like entertainment, eating out, clothing, and special purchases. Stay on budget no matter how tight things get. It's never too early to start saving money. Even if it's only $20 a week try to put something aside in a savings account. Instead of paying a tutor set up a peer study group in classes that you need extra help with. Understand Your Debt Load Student loans aside there are other ways that students get in to debt. Credit card companies target cash strapped students, most of whom are inexperienced with unsecured debt. When handled responsibly credit cards can be good things to have. If you do any shopping on the Internet you will probably need to have a credit card. Many credit card companies offer theft and fraud protection. Read the fine print of your credit card agreement to find out if you’re covered for these things. It's a good idea to have a credit card for emergencies or for major purchases like books or a bike but avoid using plastic for day-to-day spending or for entertainment. The Federal Work Study Program While Ben Franklin's idiom of "A penny saved is a penny earned" still carries weight, when it comes to money saving tips for college students, a more accurate sentiment might be, "A penny earned is a penny saved." Luckily for you, the federal government offers a work-study for qualifying students. Many schools prefer to hire work-study students as the government subsidizes part of the wages earned, making it more affordable for the college or university. Further, unlike college scholarships and grants, money earned from a work study program is paid directly from the school to the student, allowing the student to place it where it needs to be (i.e. - tuition bill, housing, books, recreation, etc.). If you want to know how to save money for college, start by helping colleges save money and let it trickle down. o: find paid internships in your field of study. Resolved Question: What does this mean when applying for student loans?

"The check is sent directly to your school, and it is paid directly to you." now i have the LIFE scholarship, although i may lose it if i fall below a 3.0 this semester (wchih i'm thinkging i might), and really only need about 2,000 of a 15,000 loan. BUT i need transportation, and books to get to college. i am in my 2nd year and need it asap, b/c my bfs car (who gives me rides, and who i live with) is now totalled and we are out a vehicle. so does this mean they will send me the rest of the amount?  more

Resolved Question: Wondering about credit cards and bank accounts?

I am in the chexsystems database for about another year from past account activity. As a result, my only bank accounts are a savings account through a credit union, and then I have Greendot, a prepaid Visa that serves as like a checking account (i use it's routing information to pay student loan and other bills). This is where my paychecks are direct deposited to. Would any of this help me or hurt me in the area of credit card approval? Do balances matter? If so I could transfer more in to my savings account I really want to rebuild credit and a low limit card (like 500) that i can pay off every month will really help me a lot Greendot hasn't done anything for my credit since it's just a prepaid thing. I understand cards have fees and all, I will shop carefully. My concern is when I do will I be hindered by the bank account situation I mentioned above? I could be in Chexsystems for over another year. Would have a savings account work? What do they ask for as far as account information when applying for credit cards (it's been 10 years since I did)  more

Voting Question: How long will it take my credit to go up 3 points?

I have 2 student loans and they are paid on time. One of them, I pay extra (toward principal). I am going to buy a house soon and if my credit is 3 points higher, than I can get a much better mortgage rate. I have the chance to check my credit for free, but can only do it once. How long do you think it will take for my credit to go up? NOTE: I do not want to apply for credit cards or more loans... each credit inquiry will deduct points from my score.  more

Resolved Question: Question about tax return when amended?

I went to a shop that did returns and the man screwed mine up he never took my schooling and student loans into consideration when doing my return so the first time I was told I was getting $300 something. Which I got but then when I spoke to another person they had to redo my taxes because I was actually entitled to $1,133 with my school loans considered. So I mailed out the paperwork the end of January beginning of February. I have called to check my status and it doesnt have one. I am not sure if I am supposed to say my return is 1133 or the 743 which is the difference I am supposed to be getting :-( HELP! I was hoping to know by now.  more

Resolved Question: If a person received a student loan and school closed,do I get the money back that the gov. has taken?

For years my checks have been garnished and all of my EIC checks taken. Plus my stimulus check was taken. I had a legal leave of absence from school and it closed without any notification. I had only found out by returning to find it boarded up. I feel as if I shouldn't have to pay anything! This has been since around 1980 something. I've finally received forms to fill out but do you think I'm going to get the answer that I should get? I'm not holding my breath. I should not be obligated to this loan and should get every bit of my money back. The loan was for only $2500.00 and even with all of the money they keep taking, I still owe almost $8000.00. Please, someone give me some great advice! Thanking y'all in advance, Blondie  more

Resolved Question: We are ready to move, but can't sell... Should we foreclose?

We bought our Townhome in Rhode Island in 2005 for 184,900 for 100% financing from the bank. The bank that held our loan is no longer in existance as a lender, but they are just collecting on the past loans they hold. Two of the 5 townhomes in our unit have already been foreclosed on. We have been hanging in there, but have huge bills, student loans, etc. We have always paid the mortgage on time and are just getting by with paying the mortgage on the one unemployment check my husband gets, since we have both been out of work since last November. We have been wanting to move back to upstate, NY where we are originally from, to be closer to family. Its very unfortunate for us though, because we can not even sell this property. Our original lender is not willing to do anything for us, and have actually suggested that since we have more debt to income, they wouldn't doubt that we probably should consider Foreclosure.... What's up with that??? I mean the woman I talked to actually told me that I'd probably have 4 months to save up some money before the bank would issue evacuation... like what??? this is crazy... Why are the banks not coming up with different plans and helping people AVOID FORECLOSURE! We have never been individuals to walk out on our problems but this ecomonic situation is getting ridiculous. I feel stressed out everyday, and to hear that the unit on the end just listed for $94,000 makes me sick to my stomach. So....in our situation....should we foreclose? and stop throwing money out the window, pay down our credit cards & increasing student loan deliquincies? and move back to NY and just rent a $600-$800 a month apartment to get back on our feet? We contacted a lawyer, he said their isn't anything that lawyers can do in this case. They can't place blame on any one person or hold specific people accountable. So unfortunately we get papers to rent it, or get paperwork started for foreclosure and bankruptcy. Starting a lawysuit against the Mortgage broker, loan officer etc... would be all bad, being that we got the loan through a friend of my husbands (who by the way doesn't work for as a loan officer anymore... for obvious reasons.... not to mention he was tied in to some pretty shady "mob" types that I wouldn't want to go pissing off. I mean the loan we got from the mortgage generator must have had connections to shady banks, and they are connected and owner by a laywer.... All BAD!  more

Resolved Question: Tax Question 1099-C and stimulus rebate?

Tax Professional Does this sound Right. I worked in Iowa and Missouri during 2008. I am 26 Married Filing Seperatly for this year. I used Tax Act to do my taxes and I have used this with no problems for 4 years. I did not work in 2007 and I should have been eligible for the stimulus check this year. My job totaled $9,450. I had 1099-C credit card debt to put on there totaling $5280. So my total income is $14, 730. Now I did this right on tax act and it shows me getting a $331 federal return. Says I got a $57 Iowa refund back and I owe Missouri state tax of $126? If someone out there who has tax knowledge could take a look at this and see if this looks accurate. This does not seem right to me. It said I was eligible for a $600 rebate stimulus for 2008 because I did not get one in 2007. But I dont see where that was applied to my rebate. Before I imput the 1099-C's I was due a Federal refund of $1003 and a State refund of $77. Was the stimulus applied to my refund I mean I know the 1099-C was applied to other income on the fed return but these figures do not seem right to me. I can't afford to go to H & R Block because I am broke and just started a job. They will take me because I have 5 W-2'S and 3 1099-C's and a student loan interest credit. Anyways I have tried to show all my information and If someone with tax knowledge can look at this and tell me If It looks pretty accurate to you.?? Please if you have any knowledge let me know. Thanks for you help!!! What should I do since I got 331 Fed. Return out of this and I apparently Owe the state $126. Which doesnt seem right. Is there a way to stop the e-file and take it to a tax service. I just dont want to shell out $200 + to a tax service if I am only getting $4-500 back.  more
