What Does It Mean To Qualify For Financial Aid Questions and Answers

Open Question: Did Obama lie when he said he was foreign in college to get financial aid or when he said he's a citizen...?

... eligible for presidency? This is really bugging me. I mean either he lied to a scholarship board and on his application and said he was not a US citizen in order to swindle money out of an organization OR he was telling the truth then and isn't eligible to be president... Which is it? It was for the Fulbright Foundation Scholarship program. To qualify, for the scholarship, a student must claim foreign citizenship.  more

Open Question: What is this supposed to mean?? Uh-oh, I think I may of done it again, oh no?

When I applied for financial aid, and got to the conformation page, it said that some amount I entered, I cant remember now what it was but it said that the amount I entered was the same as my adjusted income so my EFC couldn't be calculated, and it said for me to contact my financial advisor, and it also said that I qualify for a pell grant. What does that mean? The mistake I made wont stand in the way of my award money will it? It done that to me last time I applied for aid and ended up getting 17,147 dollars, but is that normal for etc not being able to be calculated right away? Or did I mess up somewhere? No one in my family will help me they keep saying "I dont know" "I dont know" it pisses me off, no one helping me, no wonder I mess up on it. Im afraid if I keep going in there and fixing it and tampering it, the financial aid office might get suspicious and randomly pick my application to check for accuracy like they did lays year. I mean like they did LAST year.  more

Voting Question: Should I bother with FAFSA or Financial aid?

My parents make close to 168,000 gross (Net 122,000) and adding in capital gains the household income is 180,000. While that would exclude me from most financial aid I am in an interesting situation. My parents have a Domestic Partnership in California. (Meaning my parents are gay.) My 1st dad works as a Counsel (Attorney) for a Hospital and makes 90,000 and my 2nd dad is a nursing admin and makes 73,000. Since the federal government does not recognize my parents marriages should I claim my 2nd dad as my caregiver to qualify for FAFSA.  more

Open Question: Does this says that im not go9ing to get any money from FAFSA? PLEASE HELP?

So I filled my FAFSA again ... just made some corrections because they told me it needed some corrections. THIS IS WHAT THEY TOLD ME Your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) is: 0 Your EFC is based on the information you provided on this corrections form. It may change depending on your school's verification of information you provided. The EFC is not the amount of money that you or your family must provide. Rather, you should think of the EFC as an index that schools use to determine your eligibility for federal student aid. For more information about the EFC, go to www.studentaid.ed.gov, select "Funding" then "Student Aid Eligibility" and scroll down to "How will I know what I'm eligible for?" Based on your EFC and current Federal Pell Grant requirements, your EFC indicates that you are not eligible to receive the Federal Pell Grant. However, your financial aid award may include other federal student aid like low-interest student loans and work-study opportunities, depending on which federal student aid programs your school participates in. You might also be eligible for funds from your state or school. All of this is in addition to any private scholarships you may receive. For additional information about scholarships or other sources of aid visit So it says that I dont qualify for the FEDERAL PELL GRANT. Does that mean that I dont get anymoney? Voting Question: Verification on SAR? Can you explain?

Based on the information we have on record for you, your EFC is 4415 . You may be eligible to receive a Federal Pell Grant and other federal student aid. Your school will use your EFC to determine your financial aid eligibility for federal grants, loans, and work study, and possible funding from your state and school. Your FAFSA has been selected for a review process called verification. Your school has the authority to request copies of certain financial documents from you and your parent(s). WHAT YOU MUST DO NOW (Use the checklist below to make sure that all of your issues are resolved.) If you need to make corrections to your information, select the 'Make Corrections' button at the bottom of the page. You must use your Federal Student Aid PIN to access your record online. If you need additional help with your SAR, contact your school's financial aid office or the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243). If your mailing address or e-mail address changes, you can make the correction online or call 1-800-4-FED-AID and ask a customer service representative to make the change for you. You reported that you took and passed a series of high school courses that may qualify you for an Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG). The Financial Aid Administrator at your college will determine if you are eligible for an ACG. All follow-up information about your grant eligibility will come from the financial aid office at your college. Your mother was issued a Federal Student Aid PIN to sign your 2009-2010 FAFSA. Her information has been verified and her PIN has been confirmed. Your mother should not share her PIN with anyone. The PIN stays the same from year to year and can be used to make corrections, add school codes, and view your federal student loan history. For more information on the PIN, your mother can visit www.pin.ed.gov. _______________________________________________________ What does this mean? Do I need to contact my school's financial aid office or anything or will they contact me? Do I have to apply for a pell grant or will my school just offer it to me? I'm confused. Please help. Resolved Question: Do I still qualify for financial aid if I go back to get an associate degree?

My Bachelors degree is not proving very useful with the economy as it is right now, so I am thinking about going back to community college to get an Associates degree in something that I can actually use. I received financial aid my last two semesters of University, now I am wondering - could I get financial aid for an associates, or are there limits to how much you can get?? What I mean is: in University my transcript told me that I could only accumulate so many credits to still get financial aid - but am I basically starting over with a new degree? I am sorry if this sounds confusing, I am completely confused myself. A master's degree will cost too much money, even with assistance, plus I do not have the time for that :-(.  more

Resolved Question: How do I clarify on a FAFSA that I now have a dependent I didn't claim for last year's taxes?

I am applying for Federal Student Aid, which is based largely upon your tax/financial information from the previous year. I am divorced & my ex-husband and I take turns claiming our son every other year. I did not claim my son for the 2008 tax year but will for 2009. How do I clarify on this FAFSA that although I did not claim him for 2008, I DO have a dependent this year, which is when I'm applying for aid for? For me, this possibly means the difference between whether I qualify or not.  more

Resolved Question: Am I doing the right thing? (Student loans, Financial Aid)?

I can't seem to get any answers from my fianancial aid department. I start school in the summer. I applied for a student loan through Sallie Mae. It gave the promissory note, and said thank you for your application. Now what do I do? I'm confused. I'm have so many questions (like...do I have to take a certain amount of credit hours to get the loan? What do I do next?) I also qualified for "some" financial aid (which is what the FAFSA website told me)...but what does that mean, and how do I know how much "some" is? This is so frustrating... I guess my question is....am I doing all of this right? (Completed FAFSA, applied for a Federal Stafford Loan through Sallie Mae)  more

Voting Question: Important FAFSA Question?

Long story short...I was accepted to Georgia State University and unfortunate events delayed me from going to school for the past semester and a half, so I am now arranging to make up some credits at a local accredited Technical college. Their FAFSA priority deadline was Feb 1, 2009 (which they just told me yesterday). I applied a few days after I believe, so does this mean I will not get any aid from the government whatsoever? I filled out FAFSA last year and qualified for both the Ga HOPE scholarship because of my GPA and a Pell Grant. If I have to pay the fees myself for now, will fafsa reimburse me if I quialify? Are all student loans based on fafsa? Could I take out a student loan even though my school's fafsa deadline is past, and repay the loan with my reimbursed financial aid (assuming I do get the money?) I really need a loan or some sort of money to aid me quickly because I have to pay the school in about three weeks and thought that I was getting financial aid soon. Thanks! Thanks for your help, but I did fill out the 2008-2009 FASA a few weeks ago, and I start school in a little under a month. Hopefully something will be processed by then and I can at least get a Pell Grant. That will cover all of the fees that I am unable to. I'll just go talk to the Fin Aid office. oh thank you! Fin Aid officer...just what I needed. Do you know of any loans I could get within the next two weeks? I never planned on taking out a loan, but now I have to, and I need one fast! I could easily pay it back even without the fin aid because I only need $1,000 max. I do not plan on taking out more than that.  more

Resolved Question: College tuition financial aid question?

My friend is wanting to go to college but her parents don't want to have to pay too much. They are applying for financial aid. They own two houses (given to them by relatives who passed away) that they rent out. They also own two other properties that are just small pieces of undeveloped land in the middle of nowhere. The father is on disability and the mother doesn't work. Will they qualify for a lot or a little? Will owning the properties mean that they qualify for less financial aid? Thanks, any info helps!!  more

Resolved Question: Help Me, I'm Desperate! I need suggestions for tuition help!?

Hi, I'm a college student almost finished with my degree and i'm desperate for financial help. I don't qualify for financial aid and my tuition is through the roof! Due to our failing economy, very few banks are giving out student loans. I have no credit since I am so young and my family can't qualify for the loans because of their own personal difficulties at this time. I need to go to school more than anything in this world. My school and finishing my degree means soooo much to me. I just was wondering if anyone has any suggestions to help me...Once again I'm desperate. I have tried everything and talked to just about everyone. Even if I worked several jobs I still couldn't amass the sum of money needed.  more

Resolved Question: After filling out my FAFSA, what comes next?

I filled out my FAFSA, got my EFC and now i am waiting on my SAR. After I receive my SAR, what comes next? Do I have to take this paperwork to the financial aid office of my college and they will determine if I am eligible for aid? I'm not sure how all this works because last year I had the GI Bill so even though I did fill out the FAFSA, I never read my SAR. By the way, my EFC says 1197-does this mean I have qualified for some form of financial aid? This number was a LOT lower than last year. Thanks everyone!  more

Resolved Question: What financial aid/help will I be entitled to when I attend University?

I am currently on a gap year and will be attending Uni of York and will initially be studying a diploma in Children's Nursing. I know this means I have no tuition fees and will receive a non-means tested bursary, therefore making illegible to apply for a student loan (I think that is right). Also, I come from a family that has an annual income less than £25,000 per annum, so does that qualify me for anything extra? Also, should I go to slc.co.uk too? Apologies if this all seems terribly naive!  more

Resolved Question: What qualifies me for FAFSA?

The person who does my taxes informed me that for Fall 09 I should qualify for FAFSA, because I claimed myself on my taxes. I completely support myself financially. However, both of my parents are still alive. Now, according to the FAFSA people, this means that I am still a dependant, however, I moved out of my parents home about 2 years ago, due to some problems, and am now putting myself through college by working and getting loans, but I would like some financial aid. Like I said, I have not been claimed by my parents for some time, so, should I qualify for financial aid?  more

Resolved Question: What's with the EFC & Financial Aid?

I recently filled out the FAFSA form and my EFC was about $15,000 over the price of my first choice college. However, I know that my parents really cannot afford to pay full price for college (since the FAFSA fails to take into account all their bills, mortgage, multiple car payments, and more). Since my EFC exceeds the college cost, does that mean I absolutely cannot qualify for financial aid?  more

Resolved Question: So I just got my Fafsa results, i didn't qualify for a pell grant..?

I checked my Sar on the fafsa website and it said that i didnt qualify for a pell grant and that my EFC was 8500. It didn't list anything that i did qualify for. So now what? Does it take awhile for it to find other things i might qualify for or once it says that i didn't qualify for a grant does that mean that is all the information they are going to provide? I really really want to go to college. My mom has been single mom for 13 years of my 20 year life and she doesn't have the money to help me with college, and i don't expect her to. I live on my own but i am still considered a dependent because i am under 23. I am near tears and i feel like this whole stupid college, financial aid system in America is set up to make the poor stay poor and the rich stay rich. If somebody wants to go to school, that's what should matter, not their income. My mom makes 38K a year before taxes and i have a job that i make 22k before taxes. We aren't exactly rich. I'm just really depressed and would like some suggestions of how i can get student loans. Are there any scholarships for children of widowed parents? Please help. How do i go about applying for student loans?  more

LOL not that I want to be one...its just that my friend needs money to pay for college and if stripping can help her then I would say "go for it " I know what you could say "get a decent job and get financial aid...." Resolved Question: Question about financial aid and scholarships?

I receive a Pell Grant which covers all my educational expenses. However, I recently qualified for a modest scholarship grant that is also meant to aid me in my educational expenses. I am supposed to write a thank you note explaining how this grant will aid me in accomplishing my educational goals, but I already have tuition and books covered. So what would be an appropriate way to make use of the money I will be awarded. What could I say in the thank you note. Another question. Are there specific rules guiding the use of scholarship grant funds? Such as only for education-related expenses, for example? Thanks for reading.  more

Resolved Question: Even if I file a FAFSA form, would I get any money at all?

I intend on filing a FAFSA application, but I get the feeling I won't be getting any money at all from what I've heard. My dad makes just enough money for a family of two (I could never get financial aid because of his income), and since he is remarried now, I think we make even more combined that I wouldn't be able to qualify for grants or scholarships. And I'm also working, although I make next to nothing from my job. Does that mean I will be disqualified right away? Or that I won't make a cent because of how much my family earns? Even if my family does makes a lot by normal standards, we actually can't afford a lot of my education. I even had to drop a few courses because I couldn't pay for them.  more

Resolved Question: Does anyone know of scholarships for nursing school?

We are currently seeking (my husband and I both) to go to nursing school. I am nearly done with several courses and he is only done with prerequisites...regardless, we want to go back to school as he lost his job and I am pregnant with our third child. We have got to do this to support our family and just have no means to be able to go back. I can qualify for financial aid next semester but not this one and he cannot get anymore right now. Therefore, we are in a bind and are looking for scholarships or grants. Any good suggestions? Please help...the recession has definitely entered our home that is soon not to exist.  more

Resolved Question: What kind of financial aid can you get at community college?

Say it costs $900 per semester to attend a community college, that's full-time tuition plus books, for a total of $1800 per year. But according to the FAFSA you have an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of $1952 per year. So when the costs are less than the EFC, how do you ever get financial aid? Does this mean you don't even qualify for loans or Pell Grants or ANYTHING? This is especially troubling, given that private student loans seem impossible to get at the moment.  more

Resolved Question: How can I change my Penn State residency status if I've already been accepted as out of state?

OK, here's the deal: I live in Florida with both of my parents. While almost every other member of my family lives in Pennsylvania. Also, I am currently a high school senior (18yrs old) and have been accepted to Penn State University Park campus starting Fall of 2009. Now that I've established that, does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can become a Pennsylvania resident for tuition purposes? I mean is their any possible way I could use my relatives address/Pennsylvania resident status to establish residency? I've read through Penn State's residency guidelines: http://www.bursar.psu.edu/faq.cfm?sc=Residency but I'm still not sure if having my Aunt list me as a dependent on her taxes and getting a PA drivers license and registering to vote in PA(using her address) would qualify me to petition for a change of residency status at Penn State? And if it does what should I say in my petition letter? Does anyone have any advice or suggestions of what I should do? Any suggestions of how I could get financial aid from Penn State? And please don't tell me to just give it up and pay out of state tuition b/c even with the scholarship money I've already won, the possible scholarship money that I've just applied for, FAFSA, and what I have saved up I couldn't in my entire lifetime afford Penn State's projected out of state tuition for four years. Thank you for your time and suggestions!  more

Resolved Question: My girlfriend got an abortion...?

My girlfriend and I recently found out that she was pregnant, and she told me she was thinking about an abortion, but she seemed so hesitant! I told her that I would be behind her no matter what, but I also said that I would rather her keep it, I mean it is half of me too... We're both in college. I'm a senior though... I'm going to be a teacher and I already have a couple of schools interested in me. A teacher's salary isn't much, but it can still support a family, especially if we get married, we could probably qualify for medicaid... She's a junior in college. All of her college is paid for with financial aid and I'm sure they would only be too willing to help her out again when she goes back to finish, after she has the baby. There is daycare centers and all that. I've told her all of this. But she got the abortion anyway. Without even telling me until two weeks later. I'm so depressed. I got really excited about it, you know? I can hardly look at her... I don't know if I can stay with her... I wouldn't dare ask any of my friends or family about this... I wonder what your thoughts are though.  more

Resolved Question: I really want a baby...?

My fiance and I are planning to get married in March of 2010, but lately I have been feeling absolutely desperate for a baby. I still have 6-9 months of college left (I finally qualify for financial aid so rather than finish in 6 months, I am taking a few fun classes and graduating a quarter late). My fiance has a good job, but as with everyone else I know, money is always tight month-to-month. My sister had a baby at 20 and she married the father, got divorced, and works all the time while my mom watches my niece. She is 3 now, and my sister is doing fine. I am in a steady relationship, will graduate college by the time the baby is born, and have the means to take care of a baby (within reason - no gold-plated cribs, but I have a 2 bedroom apartment, 2 cars, etc etc). I'm not saying that I am in the most financially stable place right now, but I know I would be a good mother. I have been taking care of my niece since she was born, and she comes to stay with me for weeks at a time. I have talked with my fiance about the possibility of getting pregnant, and he said that he'd be really happy, and that he'd get a second job so that we would cope. Just in case someone reading this question thinks that we are 13 or 14 (as in the case of some girls wanting to get pregnant on here), my partner is 25, and I'm 21. We have been engaged since May, and been together a few years. I'm not asking what I should do, but I am wondering about everything that I don't know. If you have had a baby at 21, what were some of the hidden difficulties you found? What are the good things about it that you can share with me? Thanks in advance. Many people say that before you have children you should travel the world, and start a career. The career I plan to have, research/experimental psychologist, is basically very low key and despite years of schooling, can be done while your kids are at school. I plan to go to graduate school in a few years, perhaps after completing several internships. And as for seeing the world, I lived in Europe for 8 years, and have seen more of the world than most adults I know. Right now I feel like there is nothing going on in my life, and I feel like I need something more meaningful. I don't sit around on the couch all day, I go to school, work two jobs, volunteer at an animal shelter, work with kids in the community, but I still don't feel like I'm doing something that matters. I have never felt more like I was making a difference than when I am spending time with my niece or working with children. Perhaps we will wait a few years, but if it happened now, I would definitely be happy!  more

Resolved Question: Financial aid and student loans?

I applied in mid Sept this year for FAFSA online. I plan to follow up with my school tomorrow in regards to my application but I wanted to know how long it usually takes to know if I qualify for Financial Aid? I worked fulltime half of 2007 and half of 2008 so I made quite a bit of money but I mean not a huge lump sum but decent. I plan to go back to school and finish now with how the economy is doing and I just wanted to see how likely am I going to get school money as well as any suggestions on student loans? If I am not qualified for Financial Aid can I still apply for a student loan? I want to use that on some credit debt and school expenses, would that work? They probably give just about 3 or 5 grand per semester? Thanks for any suggestions and advice!  more

Resolved Question: How can I get additional grants from financial aid to attend college and for school supplies?

I'll be a college freshman starting in Spring 09 (graduated early in Jan 2008 and moved to Az to gain residency and go to my college of choice) going for a B.S. in Psychology. I have a $2400 Pell grant $5500 in federal student loans. My EFC is $0. They offered a parent plus loan but my parents won't qualify and if they did wouldn't accept it. Which leaves the amount of that loan, $1500 to be paid for still. I've applied for scholarships, it doesn't mean I'll get them and doesn't help me for this semester. I don't have any credit, my parents have awful credit, my grandpa won't co-sign.. I went to three different high schools and lived in three different homes during high school, one of them being drug house, but I kept clean. I don't have ANYONE to co-sign a student loan for me. My father is an alcoholic. My mother thinks I have some demon spirit in me because I am gay. What it all comes down to is I don't have any money to pay for school supplies and equipment. I can't get a loan or money from relatives. How do I get my financial aid office to get additional grants for me, or is that possible?  more

Resolved Question: FAFSA - 2 Questions for Financial Aid Officers?

I completed my FAFSA at the F.A office at my school. The FA person asked for my "pin" to sign the application electronically. I qualified for roughly $20k in federal loans. I have now found that there is roughly $9,000 that will not be covered under Federal Student Loans (subsidized & unsubsidized) and was told I would need to get a private loan to fill the gap sorta speak. Due to the Banking woes etc - the 3 places I contacted said you have to have a debt to income ratio of under 10% or under 15%. Mine is 26% with a FICOH of low 700's. So I was denied Sallie Mae, Wells Fargo Education loan & my personal bank due to debt to income ratio. Fine, I dont have a problem with that. My main concern at this point - is since my FAFSA was signed (by the FA person at school using my PIN) will that $20k automatically be released to the school? I signed the application to the school, and when going to the FAFSA site, I cannot delete the school. What should I do to make sure $20k does not get dispursed to the school since I cannot attend due to I cant get loan for the gap between cost of tution & federal loans. Im just worried that since I signed the app to school & FAFSA it will automatically be dispursed, and I'll end up owing 20k for a program I never attended. My 2nd question - just for future knowledge - On my FAFSA report it says my Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) is 39698. What does this mean in layman's terms? Is that a code for the % my contribution would be no matter what school I attend? Or can I find a similar program at a cheaper school and get everything covered under Federal Aid. Just curious. Thanks! I already know what EFC means - Im curious how the 36968 breaks down to % and how do you figure it. So what you are saying - is even if you do NOT attend a school - you still owe 20,000 dollars for it - never attending? You said checks would be dispursed regardless if you attend or not.  more

Resolved Question: can someone please help me, i'm desperate...?

I have never been so desperate in my life, please take the time ot read this and help me out it would really mean a lot. I am a freshman at college, and in my mothers sick way she made me believe that as a senior in high school i should not apply to colleges where i would have to live on campus because id "need her". i am not at my first year at a state college, living home, and hating every single second. I went to visit a college today with my dad and i LOVED it and i was so excited, but when i got home and told my mom she said "no" plain and simple. my family doesnt qualify for financial aid because our income looks good on paper, but we really dont have the money, and my mother refuses to pay for me to go away to school (she is very controlling, im 18 and im "grounded" if i sleep over a friends and if i move away she wont have that control) I need to do what is best for me, and that is getting away. please, im asking anyone whos been in this situation or who just has any advice to PLEASE help me. i'd really appreciate it. thank you.  more

Resolved Question: 10 points to best answer!: Question about Pell Grant? ?

Hi, I'm really confused right now and need your guys' help. I beg of you guys to read through my question thoroughly as it would mean A LOT. Sorry it's kinda long. This is my first semester in community college and I applied for financial aid particularly late. This whole first semester has been very unorganized for me, so I was forced to sign up for some classes I don't need because they were the only ones that were available and would help me reach the 12 units to qualify me as a full-time student (which would give me maximum grant money). I haven't received my award letter yet, but it should come hopefully in the next few weeks. Anyway, this brings up some questions that I have. On my school's financial aid website, it says that they send out Pell Grant checks once at the beginning of the semester and once at the middle of the semster. We're actually already well into the middle of the semester, so I was wondering when I'd be receiving the checks. Do I get both checks at once for this semester? I've also had thoughts of dropping all my classes this semester since I have no motivation to take classes I don't need. If I do drop the classes, I'd be productive by reading textbooks for classes I'll need later in advance. I was just wondering if I would completely lose out on the grant money? What I mean is, if I apply for financial aid on time next year (beginning of the year), would I still be getting the money I would've gotten from this semester? I plan to stay at the community college for two years and I'd transfer out after that, but would I receive grant money for the full two years or would I completely miss out on this semester's grant money? Please please please read my question through thoroughly and give me a full answer. I will pick the best answer. Thanks.  more

Resolved Question: Can I qualify for FAFSA even if my parents still claim me?

I am about to start my last semester of graduate school, and currently have no financial aid. This is the first time ever I won't have ANY financial help from anyone, and I need a student loan that will cover tuition, books, and things like that. If my parents still claim me on their taxes, does this mean FAFSA will look at THEIR annual income when deciding how much to loan me? If so, I would definitely not qualify. I need a student loan that is not credit-based and does not look at my parents' income to decide if I qualify. Please help! I'm 23, so I guess I WOULD have to include my parents' information, which pretty much means I won't qualify. Even though they aren't going to be helping me at all, they make FAR too much money for me to qualify for any kind of financial assistance. So, what OTHER options are there besides FAFSA?  more

Voting Question: HELP ME WITH FAFSA!!! PLS?

I don't understand this part; Does this mean that they will take money out of my account? Oh and I did the same for my parents, and does that mean they will take money out of my parents bank? As of today, what is your (and your spouse's) total current balance of cash, savings, and checking accounts (question 43)? (Do not include student financial aid.): Net worth means the current value of investment(s) minus debt (what is owed). If net worth is one million or more, enter 999999. If net worth is negative or zero, enter 0. Investment debt means only those debts that are related to the investments. Investments include real estate (other than the home you (and your spouse) live in), trust funds (such as UGMA and UTMA accounts), money market funds, mutual funds, certificates of deposit, stocks, stock options, bonds, other securities, Coverdell savings accounts, 529 college savings plans, the refund value of 529 prepaid tuition plans, installment and land sale contracts (including mortgages held), commodities, etc. Investment value means the current balance or market value of these investments as of today. Investment debt means only those debts that are related to the investments. Investments do not include the home you (and your spouse) lives in; cash, savings and checking accounts; the value of life insurance and retirement plans (pension funds, annuities, noneducation IRAs, Keogh plans, etc.). Note: If you are required to report parental information and your parents own a qualified educational benefit plan, or education savings accounts - including "529" college savings plans and Coverdell savings accounts - your parents should report the current balance of the plan as a parent asset (Q88). The amount to be reported for a prepaid tuition plan is the "refund value" of the plan. If you are required to report parental information and you own any qualified educational benefit plans - you should not report the value of those plans. If you are not required to report parental information and you own (or if married, your spouse owns) any of these qualified educational benefit plans - you should report the current balance of those plans as a student/spouse asset (Q44). The amount to be reported for a prepaid tuition plan is the "refund value" of the plan.  more

Resolved Question: clueless about student financial aid..please help?

Ok so, I need financial aid to go to school next year. I'm 24 but will be 25 by the time I start...so I'm an independent. I'm not married and I don't have kids and I make a paltry 15 to 20 thou a year. With all that being said...do i qualify? I went to do the EFC calculator thingy and it's asking for my parents incomes and stuff but do i need to fill that out? I don't live with my parents, i live with a friends in another state actually... How do i apply, how can i get scholarships..i need financial help, i mean i don't expect for my whole college to be paid for but if i can get like half of it paid for that'd be so much easier on me cos for 2 years its gonna cost me 24,000 bucks.  more

Voting Question: How can i find more financial aid for college?

the problem lies with my parents they make about $80,000 a year so therefore i dont qualify...but what finacial people dont know is that my parents are financially inresponsiblity...and there irresponsiblity is causing me and my sister not to beable to afford college...they do stuff like not pay bills on time on purpose to get back at one another, they fight all the time, do drugs, and drink alot...my dad has let nearly 4 cars get reposses on purpose, eventhough he had nearly almost paid each of those cars off...this means they cant co-sign for loans for me, i cant get a loan by myself...and i dont qualify for grants....my parents refuse to get a divorce too, eventhough now they dont even live together.... so now my sister and i are at a lost, neither one of us can no longer afford to go to school, i am a third student and she is a second year...are there any opitions for us...it sux that we both have very bad parents who feel like they have no responsbilty for us what so ever...  more

Resolved Question: Should I fill out fafsa or take private loan?

I wont qualify for financial aid because my mom income is about 250k a year so I know the efc will be high. But that doesn't mean she can afford to pay $1400/credit at UM. They don't factor in everything else such as high mortgages, car notes, other siblings and previous loans. To get to the point I will be attending in spring and I wanted to know should I fill out fafsa to get a loan packet. The only reason I am scared to fill out fafsa now is because I want to use my dad for fafsa in the 2009 fall term when he claims me. His income isn't has high. But I Dont want to use my mother and change to my father because I don't want them to say I must use my mother. So I figure take a private loan in spring and then for fall I will have everything I need to apply for fafsa and recieve grants. Is this a good idea ? should I just use my mother and recieve the loans from the school? or should I just take a private student loan for spring and use my father in the fall?  more

Resolved Question: Small, liberal arts colleges?

I'm currently a senior in high school hoping to attend a small, private liberal arts college. Though not entirely sure of what career I would like to pursue, I hope to major in English and minor in Biology -- I am considering either focusing in premed (working in pediatrics) or prelaw (possibly disability or environmental law). I would love to attend a school such as Pomona or Amherst, one that offers the individuality and attention of a small school with the resources of a larger research institution, but need to get merit-based aid (since I probably won't be able to qualify for financial aid, unfortunately). GPA: 4.83 (3.97 unweighted) Class Rank: 8 / 521 SAT: 2330 (800 Critical Reading, 800 Writing, 730 Math) ACT: 33 (36 English, 30 Math, 34 Reading, 32 Science) I have taken the most rigorous courses available at my high school (majority are AP, IB, and some dual enrollment through the local community college). Activities (in brief): -Participated in a science-related work-study program at a local museum for three years -Have had a part-time job in addition to school for the past four years (originally at a museum, now at a dental office) -Attended 2005 national science fair for original research and received an award/scholarship for scientific accuracy and originality -Hold a provisional patent -Relatively active in the community -- have 200+ community service hours -Participate within church/religious groups -Member of various clubs at school -Published in local newspaper and have received a number of awards for writing Based upon the above information, what colleges do you think that I would have a good chance at being awarded a merit-based scholarship? I would hope to stay on either coast -- preferably within California or on the West Coast in general, but I am open to schools in the New England area as well. Thanks for the help -- it really does mean a lot. Please let me know if you need any additional information. :) I have gotten all A's and A+'s with the exception of one B in AP Physics. :(  more

Resolved Question: How do I ever get ahead in life?

My husband has a great job but unfortunately we still barely make it month to month on one income! I really want to go back to school to be an ultrasound tech but we don't have extra money and don't qualify for financial aid. ( we make "to much") Why can you get state help and go to school for free??? I just need a boost and feel like I will never get one! I want to better my daughters life and ours, but I feel so trapped. I mean I could get a crappy job but I would just be paying for child care! I have no family to turn to for help or money. My husband was also a marine who did 2 tours in Iraq but I can't even use his GI bill!! Anyone been in the same situation? What can I do to get ahead?  more

Resolved Question: Can I Overcome This Sexual Assault and Go Back to College???

This morning I woke up and I was extremely depressed. I am depressed because I was sexually assaulted and now I have HPV and Herpes from it. I was proactive and I went to see a psychologist at my school. I told her about my issues. She said that she is surprised I am still standing. Is that good? Does that mean that if I have made it this far maybe I can get through this? The man that attacked me and infected me with his diseases also stalked and harassed me. I dropped out of college 6 months ago. I am gong to see my psychologist in a couple days and also an academic advisor. Should I try to get back to school? I stopped going half way through the semester because I was too depressed and I get constant vaginal itching. How do I get through this? I went to the book store and got a book on positive thinking. I am trying to be positive. My dream is to become an attorney to help people fight violent crime. Do you think I should go for my dream of law school? Do you think I can make it. That creep that assaulted me makes me sad and think that humanity is evil, but today I was so happy when I went back to my college after 6 months. My psychologist was so nice and seemed to care a lot!!!! Also, the people at financial aid say I might be able to qualify for financial aid. School starts on Monday. Should I try to go to school? I don't want to look back and say that this attacker ruined my life....Like say I dropped out of college and had a horrible life. My mom has a high school diploma and my dad only has an 8th grade education. I will be the first person in my whole family to graduate college (if I go back). Also, do you think I could maybe even go to graduate school? I want to go to law school so bad!!! Also, I have only been diagnosed with HPV. I know there is a good chance I also have Herpes because I have Herpes symtoms. However, do you think I should not get diagnosed on Herpes? I think that would be way too depressing. Can I do positive thinking to make the herpes go dormant? Also, can I have a husband someday? I want to get married and have childen, but I also want to adopt from third world countries. My psychologist seemed to still accept me even though I have STDs, do you think I will find a husband that does? Also, will Herpes make me sick a lot? I have had it for 10 months now. I had one outbreak in November and now my second is in August. I just get red ulcers that eventually crust over. Do you think the worst is over? Someone told me that the worst break out is the worst? I am putting baby powder on the sores and they are helping the itch go away. Please help me. Should I not give up and keep trying? I hope I can go back to school on Monday. I want to succeed in life so bad. Am I a diseased person? Please help!!!! Will Herpes affect my health? I don't want to get sick  more

Voting Question: Unsecured loan for Unemployed

I have been actively surfing the net for almost a hundred times now looking for an answer in hope to solve my currently situation. I have been unemployed for almost two weeks now and in desperate need for some financial aid in means for me to move in search for a new employment and to settle some ongoing outstanding tabs at current. Regret to say that I am not eligible to apply for such aid within my region as i don't meet the requirements of earning an income of $30,000 per annum or even any amount lower. Most of the requirements needed to secure a loan here is for those who are earning, but my current situation being unemployed with no any such earning do not permit me under any terms at all. Therefore i am cornered to a decision to search for help elsewhere that will qualify me for unsecured loan for unemployed. Please assist me with further information soonest possible on how I can I find a solution to rectify my financial issue. Thank you. Bless all.  more

Voting Question: College takes away financial aid package?

After applying to over 10 colleges I picked my in state school The College of New Jersey because we are a low income family so with the federal grants and state grants, it would be more affordable. As we all know financial aid packages are always estimates first. I logged onto my school account and it seems like they took away all the have previously "given" me which are stafford loan, pell grant and supplemental education opportunity grant , a total of 9,000 dollars. In return they replaced it with the 7,000 state grant. I thought that with what the school offered and the state I can handle the cost of attendance. if they just give me 7,000, I cannot afford the 20,000 plus tutition. I have to call monday to see if it is a miscommunication or something. I am so stressed out and worried because this would mean that I can't go to a 4 year college which has been my dream. my question is can they take away federally alloted/approved grants that I qualify for by the FAFSA?? If you put the awards separately, the state grant is better than the school one. BUT I do believe you are allowed to have federal and state grants combined, that's why I chose this school. I need both the stafford loan, pell grant and state grant to afford school.  more

Resolved Question: Am I guaranteed to get a Stafford Loan if I qualify?

I filled out my FAFSA a while ago and have received my financial aid letter and it said that I qualify for a stafford loan. I applied for one at Wachovia(that's the bank my parents use) a few weeks ago, and haven't gotten a reply yet. I'm getting a bit worried because my school's financial aid deadline is Aug 1st and I need to know if I am going to get this loan or not really soon so I can find alternate means of paying before the deadline. So! If I qualify does that mean that I am guaranteed to get the loan, or what? Should I be applying to multiple lenders just to be safe? I'm a worry wort and this is driving me nuts!  more

Resolved Question: Can I procure a student loan under my circumstances?

I am going to WSU next year and I want a student loan. My parents make good money, but have decided not to help me at all. This also means I most likely won't qualify for financial aid. I have a credit score of about 715-720, I am 18, and I have my AA already. I work part-time, but I wont work during school. Without a co-signer, will I be able to get a student loan that covers all expenses (tuition, books, living expenses) for 2 years?  more
