Open Question: I dont understand the situation for applying to FAFSA?

I'm planning to attend college in Fall 2009, hoping to get a scholar ship but when i go to the site it wont let me apply yet until some date. Im really confused. Is financial aid and scholarship basically the same thing?  more

Open Question: How do you deal with an aging relative and go about helping them through the early stages of dementia?

My grandfather and I used to be fairly close because we were the only two left living in the state we were in, everyone else was at least a 14 hr drive away. I lived with him for awhile during a few school breaks (im in college) and then suddenly he wanted me to leave and all of my things to leave (I had a few items stored at his house such as a snowboard and skiis and one larger box with a few keepsakes from high school and such inside). He threw away some important things to me saying he was trying to clean out his house. His house is fairly large and difficult for him to take care of. I have cleaned and organized his house several times for him. He saves everything and has had meat in his freezer for years at a time (some from the '90s last time I cleaned it out). He has gotten much worse since we have seen each other, and I dont know how to help. He has lost his library card so many times that the library told him not to come back. He forgets his medications, or claims he left it places he hasnt. He has been losing credit cards, etc. He is extremely stubborn and wont move out of his house because it is the house he built himself, but it is falling apart. He has more money than he knows what to do with, but wont spend a dime. His truck is older than I am (im 21) and he still wont even buy a windshield wiper for it, he uses a hanger and yarn to hold it together! He has awful personal hygiene and will go long periods of time without showering or changing clothes. No one knows what his health is truly like, what his financial situation really is, anything. He has several bank accounts all over the 100,000 mark-that is all we know. He filed for assistance with oil for heating and the state is giving him aid, we do not know why. Anyway, if anyone actually read all of this, it worries me so much and I dont know what to do. I know he does not like me anymore, but I still send him emails weekly (he never responds) and he will no longer send birthday/christmas cards to me, but will send one to all siblings and cousins with 100 dollars inside. I am the youngest grandchild and stuggle the most with finances, but the money does not bother me-its the fact that he will not communicate with me and is playing games.  more

Open Question: Concerning FAFSA, Include parents' information if...?

Do I have to include my parents' information if I am living on my own and not depending on their financial support to pay for college? I think I am going to the financial aid office today though...but the question's still open!  more

Open Question: How to get a Brazilian international student to study in USA?

I have a really smart friend who lives in Brazil studying computer engineer for his undergraduate minor. But his college over there is not a name brand college and he is from a middle class family who can't really afford the crazy international tuition fee we have in USA. Do you know of any methods that he could come to study here with scholarships and tons of financial aid? Or what college in California has relative low international student tuition fees? Please help. Thanks!  more

Open Question: Will I still be eligible for financial aid?

I am currently going to Community College, and I want to go to Full Sail next semester. I am taking 4 classes. I am not doing so hot in 2 of them, and I am already currently on probation. I don't think they will take me off of probation after this semester because of those 2 classes. My gpa has to be significantly higher than last semester, but it's only a tad higher. But since I don't plan on registering in this school again I figured it wasn't a big deal. At my current school I have a Federal stafford loan subsidized and unsubsidized that equal up to 5,500 for the fall/spring semester. Will I still be able to get financial aid at Full Sail? I want to start in January and skip the spring semester at my community college. Does this seem possible? I am afraid that since I was on probation here, I won't get any financial aid.  more

Open Question: How should I build my credit?

I'm a first-year college student. I live at home, financial aid pays for my tuition, and I use my mom's car - so I don't really have a need for an installment loan. After apping four times for a card, I was approved for a 1k limit credit card with my dad as a co-signer. My question is, where should I go from here? Should I wait about 6months for the inquiries to fade, then app for a few more CC's, should I take out a personal loan just to diversify my credit? What should my strategy be to have a good score before I graduate? Just a note, I plan on utilizing no more than 10% of my credit, and will pay in full each month. Thanks much!  more

I'm graduating this year from high school. I only live with my dad. My father is on Social Security because he isn't able to work. My mom was on Social Security as well but she recently pasted away. I have a little bit of money in my banking account, but it is for medical expenses. We live in a low income housing project. I'm going to a community college!!! How do I apply for financial aid? Do I do it online? What website? Is it free to apply? If I'm like in my 30s or 40s, will I be able to get financial aid? Does the money come from the government or from the school. Do I have to pay it back??? OK so what happens if I do get money and I have to "drop out" of college to help my dad, will I have to pay it back then? Do you apply twice a college school year or once?? Do I apply every year or just once for the 4 years?? Would you get a check in the mail or would the money from financial aid go directly to your school of choice???? Will they check my banking account?? Any info will help. Open Question: How does scholarship awards affect your financial aid?

There is a book award scholarship at Chabot College that offers up to $300 dollars. However, it is a federal regulation that any possible money awarded to me will affect my financial aid. So how in all does it affect my financial aid? I think its If I receive $300 dollars from the scholarship, does it subtract $300 from my financial aid? If so, what is the point to doing it? But more than likely, that's not how it should work, correct me if I am wrong.  more

Resolved Question: I didn't fill out a CSS profile (it was due Nov 1), I have no idea what to do now?

I applied early decision to Dartmouth College, and thought they only required FAFSA for financial aid (I think I looked at the wrong page). Open Question: About how much does it cost to get a Cosmetology Degree in NC?

I have always wanted to become a hairdresser, but instead went to college at UNC and graduated like my parents wanted, and have never been happy doing these office jobs. I feel like it's time for me to live my life for me and do something that I enjoy. Besides, a successful hairdresser can make good money, especially if you work up to owning your own salon. Since my man is currently deployed, I was thinking of pursuing that. Just wondering which schools do you recommend in the NC area, about how much do they cost, how do the part-time programs work, and how do you get financial aid?  more

Open Question: Vanderbilt or FAMU? Which do I choose?

Ok here's my problem. I'm at a crossroads here between choosing these two schools and no one around me is helping. Everyone who told me to follow my own feelings (mom, guidance and college counselors) and do what I think is right wants me to go to Vanderbilt, my first choice when I didn't know a thing about college. It was ok then, until I started looking at Florida A&M. Now I'm being too emotional about my college choices and selling myself short apparently. I want to major in Computer Science, and Vandy is close to Memphis, where I live, but people I know who have been there tell me the environment and atmosphere is terrible. Also, they don't seem interested in me at all, and their tiny scholarships with too much paperwork won't do a thing for me, I'm poor as a church mouse. I don't want to end up at Vandy because someone pitied or allowed me to go there. I don't want to go somewhere I'm not wanted. Florida, on the other hand, is actively pursuing me. The people I meet are nice, and I hear nothing but positive things about the school. Plus, they've offered me a full ride scholarship covering books, tuition and fees, room and board, a laptop, and like $500 a semester, and that's only one of the scholarships I can get, plus my financial aid. I'd never have to worry about money. It's an HBC though, and that turned me off a bit because being black, I've seen enough black people for one lifetime, but that doesn't bother me anymore. However, everytime I even mention the school, my counselors shoot me down. They tell me I deserve so much more, but I don't see the problem with FAMU. Vanderbilt just seems so snooty to me, I don't feel welcome. So I just need an honest opinion from someone who's not trying to sell me either one. Will it hurt my future to go to FAMU, or should I suffer in poverty and depression at Vanderbilt like all my friends for the "prestige"? Help me out.  more

Resolved Question: Do I have a case for a lawsuit? What lawyer would take up the case?

A group that helps people who went through foster care with their college tuition refused to help me after they looked at my juvenile record. Isn't it illegal to look up my juvenile record without my authorization, and isn't it also illegal to deny me financial aid based on my juvenile record? The financial aid was denied to me when I was 18, and I will be 24 in a few days. I am a junior at Michigan Technological school now. I had to hold off going to college right away because I did not have the funding for three years. Someone said it was moot because I am in college. I still have college loans to be paid though which they would of covered. I did not give permission for the agency to look at my juvenile record. Please answer what kinds of lawyers would take this case if it is a case too.  more

Open Question: About financial aid and college?

What are my options if my plan is to go to Paul Mitchell beauty school this following December while i am still seventeen? My mom is not going to co-sign on anything and she refuses to pay for any of my college fee which is 17,000. I'm going to be moving out down south so ill be with out family. Since i am only going to be seventeen when i move, my mom says she will sign papers for me to get emancipated that way she wont ever have to pay for anything to do with me (i'm not a "bad kid" at all i just have a gold digger mom who is careless). I will be able to get a job there so paying for school wont be extreme. i just need to get a student loan. Also i am applying for as many grants and everything as i can. I am the first person in my family to be going to college besides my brother. Also i am 25% Indian but my parents never signed me up for any thing to get money for college. Is there anything i can do still so me being Indian can benefit me in college? My dad cant help in any way since he has no job and bad credit.  more

Open Question: Do private Universities look at both parents' income for financial aid?

I heard that if you only live with one parent public colleges only look at that parents income when deciding how much financial aid to give you, but that private universities look at both parents even if the parent you don't live with doesn't support you and I was wondering if that is true?  more

Open Question: USC or Cal Poly Pomona?

Hi, I am a junior in high school and am considering applying to the colleges above. I am assuming I will get accepted by both. =) I am unsure as to which college to attend. USC is my dream school but it is very expensive and I would have to live in a dorm freshman year.(not exactly my cup of tea) As for financial costs, USC is a private college, therefore in control of their own money and bank(USC Credit Union), which allows them to provide a lot of financial aid and lower cost loans. This simmers down the cost issue. Another option rather than going straight to USC is to attend Cal Poly Pomona for 2 years (GED) and then transfer to USC for my bachelor's and ultimately my master's. (business) This is a cheaper route, allowing me to save on college costs and mainly overall. However, if I deny USC the first time, will it come back to bite me in the "you know what" when I try to transfer and them possibly not accepting me!? This is a difficult situation. Any advice will help. PS: This is mainly for me to decide whether to take the SAT Subject Tests and plan my schedule for my senior year. (Just foreshadowing the future) ;)  more

Resolved Question: How can I get additional grants from financial aid to attend college and for school supplies?

I'll be a college freshman starting in Spring 09 (graduated early in Jan 2008 and moved to Az to gain residency and go to my college of choice) going for a B.S. in Psychology. I have a $2400 Pell grant $5500 in federal student loans. My EFC is $0. They offered a parent plus loan but my parents won't qualify and if they did wouldn't accept it. Which leaves the amount of that loan, $1500 to be paid for still. I've applied for scholarships, it doesn't mean I'll get them and doesn't help me for this semester. I don't have any credit, my parents have awful credit, my grandpa won't co-sign.. I went to three different high schools and lived in three different homes during high school, one of them being drug house, but I kept clean. I don't have ANYONE to co-sign a student loan for me. My father is an alcoholic. My mother thinks I have some demon spirit in me because I am gay. What it all comes down to is I don't have any money to pay for school supplies and equipment. I can't get a loan or money from relatives. How do I get my financial aid office to get additional grants for me, or is that possible?  more

Open Question: Any advice on going to college out of state?

Open Question: Should I just give up on school?

Everything that can go wrong...will and has. I am so depressed. I am having so much trouble getting a job. I decided to finally stick with school. I am 27 and started college. I really think if I finish, things will be better. My husband, however, thinks that I am wasting time. I wanted to show him that I can stick with school and work at the same time. I think that is how it should be. I am just having so much trouble finding a job. Money is so tight. Any money that goes into school comes from student loans and financial aid..nothing out of pocket. Well, I have two interviews coming up on thurs and friday. I am really happy about that, but of course something has to go wrong. We got up this morning and realized that the radiator on the car busted. We have NO MONEY to fix it. I don't have money to take cabs to the interviews and my family wont help. My husband doesn't get paid until next friday. We are screwed. Of course, he blames me. He says "If I already had a job we would be fine." I've been searching day in and day out. My life is searching. I just feel so bad. He says that I would have more time if I weren't wasting my time with school. But, I took only two online courses this semester. I am an English major. My husband blames me for everything. When I am working, he complains that I am working too hard to and can not attend all of my son's school functions, half days and days when his school his closed. I'm in a lose lose situation .  more

Resolved Question: Should I go with Plan A or Plan B in terms of choosing a college?

I'm having major financial problems finding money to pay for college. Right now, I've given my self two choices. What would you do in this situation? Plan A: Go to the University of Iowa (I was accepted) and try to get loans for the part of tuition that financial aid doesn't cover (which is a lot). I also can't get any scholarships because I never graduated from high school...I got my GED instead and I never did any volunteer work. I'm from Alaska and the out-of-state tuition is pretty high, but the University of Iowa is apparently a highly respected school and it has the exact major I want to take. Problem is that Iowa isn't THAT highly respected and what if the degree I earn won't land me a job that will pay off my loans? Plan B: Move in with my sister who lives in Texas and attend community college in Houston for the first two years, then transfer to the University of Texas, also declaring residency. Even if they don't give me the resident tuition cost at University of Texas, at least my first two years of college would definitely cost less than half of Iowa's out-of-state tuition. The problem with that is that there's no guarantee that I will be able to transfer out after graduating from community college (though I'm pretty confident that I will) and still...I'd be going to community college for 2 years. Not so good for a resume, is it? There's also a good chance that I'll apply for a transfer to Iowa again after community college if I don't get into University of Texas or some of the other schools that I plan on applying for. More notes: I did get into a couple of other schools, but they offered little to no financial aid and they were hardly worth spending all that money on: UMass Amherst, Arizona State University and a couple of 3rd tier universities. Please give me your input. Any opinion would be really helpful! I plan on majoring in International Studies or Comparative Literature and minoring in Communication/Broadcasting or Film Studies...whichever provides more production and hands-on media experience. I don't know what job I want to go for after I graduate. I might try and spend some time in the field of entertainment or find a job overseas. I do plan on teaching English in Taiwan for a few years after I graduate. I don't know if I will go on to graduate school straight after that or find a job and earn my master's part-time. I do know that I want to earn a master's degree some time in my life. What about as a translator? What path should I choose if I want to interpret and translate? To tell the truth though, I'm looking for a degree that will allow me to get a decent job overseas, so that I can stay permanently. My goal is to find an maintain a steady job in Taiwan...doesn't matter what or who I work for as long as I earn a decent income and be able to pay off my loans. I can even work for an American company but station in Taiwan. So I guess it's not what I want to do, but rather where I want to be.  more

Open Question: Searching for grants for women in science. Please help!?

I'm hoping to find a website or websites that have information on where I can apply for grants. I'm a woman - 18, been out of HS since I was 16 - looking to get a science degree. Probably physics, maybe math. I figure there are a lot of grants in this field, but I can't find any information on them. Open Question: cost of attendance with financial aid..?

I recently applied for financial aid with my community college. I am taking 13 credits this semester (12 makes you full time) and I looked on my status update and it said my cost of attendance is $8074. What can I expect my financial aid amount to be? My friend said she thinks I divide that by two and that's the amount I am going to get each semester (if I'm full time). Does anyone know for sure? Thanks!  more

Open Question: why am i only receiving 500 dollars in pell grants?

So i am trying to start college and i get an award letter back from my school saying i am only eligible for 1500 dollars in loans and 500 in pell grants for a total of 2000 dollars. I am 18 years old with a family of 7 ( including me and both my parents) my parents are currently separated and are about to get divorced, and they were separated at the time i filled out my fafsa...we are currently on housing and food stamps because my mother is also planning on going back to finish school to become an RN. So i am still wondering why am i only eligible for this amount, i know a few friends who are getting all most all their financial aid from pell grants and their parents are still married and make way more than what my parents make? I have spoken with the financial aid office at the school i plan to attend and they werent of much help...all they said was the amount listed was the amount i was gonna get i could either accept it or decline it....the amount wouldnt even cover the cost of tuition and books  more

Resolved Question: Need Advice, Underage Ex-girlfriend is Pregnant. Please Advise Me!?

Well, about a week ago my life took a sharp turn. My Ex-girlfriend called me up and told me that she has been off her period for two months now and that she has been gaining weight. I had her take a pregnancy test and she took four of them to be sure. Three came back positive and one came back inconclusive, she has a doctors appointment later this week but we are already pretty sure that she is pregnant. Here is where i'm in need of some guidance. I'm 18 and a freshman in college and she is 16 and a junior in high school, she will turn 17 before the baby is born and we haven't decided whether we are going to get back together or not but i still plan to be as involved as i possibly can, but i have several legality questions concerning this. Such as, whose last name will it take?, my responsiblities of the baby, and would this even be considered legal in Texas? I also have questions concerning different financial aid programs that are out their. I already have about six grand saved up from previous jobs and i plan to give 90% of this to her parents for financial help, i need the other 10% for gas money and other such necessities. I also plan on getting a job over the school breaks and during the summer and i plan on giving 90% of my paychecks to help pay for financial aid and keeping the other 10% for the same reason.I know both our parents will help out some, but i know this still won't be enough for the financial burden a baby brings and right now i really need to keep school a priority so i can hopefully give this baby what it deserves someday, so i was wondering about different programs such as WIC or welfare or anything else. I take this very seriously and i intend to step up to the plate and be a man about it. I plan to go to a planned parenthood center very soon, but any and every piece of information i can't get will be greatly appreciated. Thank You. Oh, and also we live in different cities right now, as i'm off at college and she is back home. However, its a two hour drive back home and i'm free most of the weekends.  more

Open Question: Is it better to attend a community college first and then university or stay with the university frm the start?

Financial aid-wise, which option is better? I know the community colleges are cheaper and then I can transfer, but also when you apply to a university for the first time, they give you a lot of scholarship incentives from first time freshman only. What did you do? Which is better? I'm thinking about going to UH because they will cover my full tuition and fees for 4 yrs, and will give me a scholarship about 6k a year for 4 years because of my rank and SATs. That seems really nice, but I don't know if it will cover book, housing and food costs. For the community college at home, they will also pay for my tuition and fees, but I don't know about anything else. I get to live at home because it's so close. I'll have to transfer to UH either way because they have a pharmacy sschool there, but it seems so expensive... What do you think? What would you do?  more

Open Question: How much will I get from FAFSA?

From what I understand is that financial aid will bridge the gap between the cost of the university and my EFC. I'll be going away from home to attend my college. Will financial aid only over the cost of admission, excluding room, board, and books? I keep reading in some grants that they will not provide more than the "cost of attending". Can you tell me how does financial aid determine enough is enough? thanks in advance! Thank you, Suddenly Human. That was great advice!  more

I'm pretty new to the whole financial aid thing. I'm only a sophomore in high school. Is there a limit on how many scholorships you can actually use? Do any colleges limit how much scholorship money you can use? Any other information would be greatly appreciated because i would like to start applying as soon as possible.
