Open Question: Which credit card is best for a college student going abroad?

I'll be studying abroad in Australia this spring semester and I need a credit card for emergencies and to buy my plane ticket soon. Since I get a lot of financial aid/scholarships, my university will give me back whatever money's leftover after all the necessary credits have been applied and I will be able to pay off the credit card in full. I've never had a credit card before, but everyone I know who's been abroad and even my study abroad adviser have highly recommended that I get one, so I'm not really sure what to look for in a credit card. Any suggestions/recommendations will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance. =]  more

Voting Question: Does a full tuition scholarship with a GPA minimum go by semester or year?

Hello! I have a full-tuition scholarship that stays in place as long as I maintain a 3.0 GPA and reapply for financial aid each year. Does this mean that my college will look at my GPA after each semester to determine whether or not to give me my scholarship, or will they check every year (take the average of the fall and spring semesters)? I attend Baruch College. Thank you!  more

I'm a senior and I'm going to need financial aid next year. I'm Latina and my family makes less than $40,000 a year. I have a GPA above 4.0. I'm in the top 1% nationwide with my ACT score. Are there specific scholarships I should look into?  more

Resolved Question: PLEASE!!! Can you help me find a suitable PREP school? ?

I'm already applying to Phillips Exeter Academy, Asheville and Loomis Chaffee. But I really need some back up schools. Asheville and Loomis Chaffee were originally my back-ups. But then again, their acceptance rates are pretty low too. Requirements of school: 1) above 45% acceptance rate. 2) need-based financial aid program (I don't think I can get any scholarships & my parents can't afford anything above $20 000/year) 3) uses Harkness Teaching 4) must have swimming as a sport and piano and violin too 5) over 50 extracurriculars 6) high acceptance to ivy league schools I would really appreciate your help, thank you in advance. Voting Question: Air Bud...fun loving dog, or leech on society?

Okay, Air Bud was a dog that played highschool basketball. Is this a problem? Maybe so. Think about it this way though, Air Bud can shoot the ball, can run fast and can also be a team player. Well, in order to play on the highschool level, one must be a student athlete, with the word 'student' as the key word. Being a scholar athlete means that you have to be able to make practice everyday, depend on your teammates, and be able to be the support your teammates need also. But dont forget about that word 'student'. Could Air Bud hold a pencil to do homework? No. Could Air Bud type out a paper, or research for those papers? No. Could Air Bud even comprehend what class to go to for 5th period? No. What my argument is, is that Air Bud was not an a-typical student athlete. A real student athlete, either on the college level, or in this case the highschool level, balences studying and homework along with his choice of sport. It seemed to me that Air Bud would just show up at the games and play without going to school. Why is this fair to have a teammate be able to play in games and even start when they either cut class or dont go to practice? It is not fair. If I were the one riding the bench on that team I would be very mad, as something that doesnt attend classes, doesnt put in the time and effort in practice, and sleeps all day gets more playing time than me. I would be very devestated. This brings me to the point of the proposed question: Should we be paying scholarships or special 'financial aid' to Air Bud if he is not holding up to his end of the deal of being a professional student as well as an accomplished athlete? Should a college pay Air Bud to attend their college and play for them if they already know that he cant even read and write, let alone attend class? I think that there is a problem here and I believe that Air Bud needs to step back and take a look at what he is doing. If he were so good and did get money to play for a college team, he would do it in a heartbeat. But is this fair to the kid who worked just as hard as Air Bud, if not harder and didnt get that scholarship? I am asking you people...is it fair to have a dog play on a basketball team, considering all of these problems?  more

Resolved Question: Good colleges in Boston?

I really want to go to a (good) college in Boston. Unfortunately, many are very expensive or just not that good. I'm currently looking into Northeastern University but it's EXPENSIVE. I'm interested in art and design, foreign language (Especially Japanese) and anthropology...do you know of any good colleges that offer courses in those in Boston, and are either relatively affordable or have good financial aid and scholarships? I also love Salem so if the college is in Salem and still good and stuff, that'd be good to know too  more

Voting Question: Private Undergrad Loans?

I have scholarships, federal loans, federal grants, and a little bit of my own savings. However, this is not enough to cover my tuition and living expenses. The financial aid advisers at my school are relatively useless and have not assisted me in any way, shape, or form. I therefore am reaching out to you, online community, in hopes of finding some answers. I do have a willing cosigner with good credit. I have a relatively good (but short) credit history. I need to take out a loan that will be deferred until after graduation, preferably with about a six month grace period. I'm looking at a loan from $8,000-$10,000 loan, and need it as soon as possible. I've looked around at loans... But honestly, I have no idea what any of the percentages and rates mean. What should I be looking for in a loan? Does anyone know of an exact loan that they've personally taken out and had good experiences with? Much appreciated, Desperate&Broke College Student  more

Open Question: How can I pay to go to college?!?!?!?

I am 18 with an Associates degree in Washington state. I want to transfer to WSU in January, but I don't know how I can pay to go to college. I come from a high income family, so my FAFSA isn't going to give me much financial aid. Also I have applied for hundreds of scholarships, but I haven't heard anything back yet. I am willing to get a loan, but my parents refuse to co-sign on it, and I have no credit. I want more than anything to go to college, but I don't see any way I can afford to go. Please help!  more

Voting Question: Where can I find financial aid for EMT training?

I have tried looking for scholarships but I cannot find any that I qualify for. I already have a bachelor's degree and as such I am maxed out on federal student loans. Resolved Question: what web site can I search to find help with scholarships and grants?

Resolved Question: College financial aid and grant?

Alright. I'm applying to a top-notch school and I just visited their website. To my horror, I read there is no merit scholarship awarded. The school is my number one and my parents make way to much money to receive any government aid. They school costs 50 thousand and I can only afford 25 at the moment. Options!? Also, my other schools are pretty top-notch as well. While they offer big scholarships, you really have to be at the very top of their applicant pool to be considered. Will I still get some money maybe? AHH! I hate this.  more

Voting Question: School scholarships for military families?

I desperatly need scholarships for school since the school i plan on attending is out of state. My parents do not get a lot of financial aid because of their income. I have been looking up scholarships for awhile now, expecially military dependent ones since my whole family is affaliated with the military, however, they are all retired or do not serve anymore. My mom was a navy chief who served for twenty years, and my father was in the navy and national guard, but again does not serve anymore. Is there any scholarship that is for students that have a parent(s) that are retired from the military? Everyone i find is for active duty only..  more

Resolved Question: Would it be better to fail the class or withdraw?

I am a freshman in college, and I am struggling with my Algebra class. I should not be in the class as I have not met the requirements for it, and I do not understand most of what has been taught. I have failed all of the quizzes so far. I am unable to answer half of the questions, and even after tutoring I find myself completely lost. The course will be over in a four or five weeks, and it will take a miracle in order to pass. I am past the refund period for any of my classes. I was told I can take the class and try to pass (which is very unlikely) or withdraw which will show a Withdrawal with Failure (or something along the lines of that) on my transcript. Either way, I will most likely be taking a math course at the local community college and transferring credits (I am attending school online at the moment). I will save money by paying the cheaper fees to take a class at the community college, and I think I will benefit from having math taught in a classroom environment. What would my best option be? I am not using financial aid at the moment, and I am going to attempt to depend on working (If I can find a job), scholarships, and grants to pay for college before I turn to the assistance of loans. So should I just try to pass the class and hope for the best, or should I withdraw and get a withdrawal with fail for the course? Do you think it is wise for me to retake math at the community college and transfer credits since math is a struggling point for me? I have been trying to get extra help. I have been having tutoring sessions online, and I spend hours working on single problems. I do not even see how I can scrape a D when I do not understand anything taught in the class. My current grade is a 3.47%  more

Resolved Question: Advice for going to school and raising a newborn?

I currently attend a college that costs about $24,000 a year. I get so much in financial aid and scholarships though that I only pay $800 out of pocket. I also just found out that I was pregnant. I was wondering how could I raise a child and go to school at the same time. The father goes to the same school as I but he has to pay a bit more. He really wants to be a teacher and I really want to be a doctor. I know that I can finish college and then go to med school later but I was wondering is it possible to go to school and raise a child at the same time. We have decided to live in the campus apartments for families. So that should help a bit. Also about how much does it cost to raise a baby monthly. About how much does it cost initially? Just any advice about anything would help so much! Thank you!!!! Also, I currently work at a coffee shop. Something much like starbucks and I only get paid $7 an hour but I was offered a job that pays $8..25 that I will work. The father currently does work study which only pays $1500 a semester. But he will obviously find a new job. My Family and friends would of course help out with everything but they are back in chicago and I am in Nebraksa. The father is also from Nebraska. We each currently have our own insurance policies and I was gunna put the baby on the gerber grow up plan.  more

Resolved Question: I feel like I won't get any money for college...?

My parents make almost $140,000 a year, so I don't think we'd be getting any financial aid there. And my GPA is only a bit higher than 3.5, with an SAT score of 1960. So I don't think I qualify for very many scholarships right there. The sad thing is I want go to a school like george washington, which I know is VERY expensive, and my parents don't want to pay for the whole thing, of course....so do you think I'll get any money at all?  more

Resolved Question: Two MicroEconomics Questions: Can you help me?

I am stuck. I am not sure of these two questions. In this chapter, we are covering price-searchers and also price discrimination. The second question looks look, but the beginning is just background information that may help. 1) The tuition increase for resident students will be partially offset by scholarships. What is an economic term for such scholarships? A. Excess profits B. Price discrimination C. Profits D. Wages E. Marginal revenue 2. A small college has space for a maximum of 1,000 students. The college can identify 500 of its students who are willing to pay $20,000 per year and 500 students who are willing to pay $10,000 per year. The college has annual fixed costs of $10 million, and the variable cost for each additional student is $5,000. To continue operating, the college must receive payments equal to its total costs (that is, total fixed costs + total variable costs). Suppose a rich donor offers to pay all of the fixed costs at this college to make sure that it can stay in operation. However, because he opposes price discrimination on moral grounds, the donor places one condition on his offer: From now on, the school must charge all of its students the same amount. That is, it should ask everyone to pay the same tuition and offer no financial aid. Assuming that the college chooses the price that maximizes its profits, would this condition lead to an increase in social welfare, as measured by the sum of consumer and producer surplus? A. No. If the college sets a single profit-maximizing price, the deadweight loss will equal $2.5 million. B. Yes. The donor's condition would prevent the college, which is a price maker, from engaging in price discrimination that causes deadweight losses. Please help me. I will really appreciate your time and effort. I have been in college for two and a half years. In that time I have done all of my work on my own. Thus, I do not see the logic in your response gotAnswer. I do not get my answers from the outside unless I am totally stuck. These are only two questions out of an entire assignment. In addition, this is only the second occasion in which I use this service for homework help. You do not know me and my educational habits, but I, and the rest who read this, will surely know about you and your self-righteous narrow-mindedness.  more

Resolved Question: How to pay off college and dorm?

I want to go to NYU, and also dorm there. Most of the people get 60% financial aid to the tuition, so that's around $20K. Along with scholarships, my parents won't pay more than $5K a year.and definitely they won't help me pay for dorm. It's around $13K a year. How can I pay it off myself? I am not a big fan of student loans, because I want to go to graduate school (medical) afterwards.  more

Voting Question: Is it dumb to spend money on a private school to get a business degree?

I am a transfer student looking at some new schools. I have a lot of people telling me that spending all that money to go to a private university is a waste of money for a business degree. Resolved Question: Is it worth the time and money?

I'm a sophomore in college with a 4.0, but can't seem to get any scholarships, and financial aid doesn't like people who work. I'm tired of the BS, being broke, stressing over meaningless subjects that I will never think about again after the final. I guess my question is is getting a degree really worth the time and money you have to invest in it?  more

Voting Question: How does Financial Aid work?

I've already filled out my application and have an EFC of 399. My school has notified me that they have received my application so now I suppose its a waiting game til I get an award letter telling me how much I'll really be paying. My question is, will I have to pay my tuition and then receive a check for it? or do they go ahead and pay it? What about textbooks or other expenses? If I apply for 3rd party scholarships, will I receive those funds on top of my aid? I have been accepted and I know that it's being processed. I had to send in tax returns. Any extra money would be so helpful as I will be driving to campus an hour away several times a week.  more

Resolved Question: Can you get scholarships for Columbia University?

I'm in the 8th Grade and right now I'm taking Pre-Ap classes. I have all A+'s right now. But anyways, I really want to go to Columbia. :] If I were to get a scholarships, can you use scholarships to get into Columbia? I also heard that they give financial aid. Is that the only way to get into Columbia? Ahh, I'm kind of confused about this whole money thing and going to college. Cause I don't really come from a wealthy family and there's no way I would afford Columbia.. This confused me a bit: http://www.studentaffairs.columbia.edu/finaid/eligibility/philosophy.php The past where it says "Financial Aid at Columbia is need-based. There are no academic, athletic or talent-based institutional scholarships." ?? Does that mean that you can only get financial aid if you need it? If someone would just explain this to me, I'm a bit puzzled. xD And maybe some ideas on how to get into Columbia? <33  more

Resolved Question: How does the economy turmoil affect college students?

I'm under a four year scholarship and financial aid. But I'm still a bit worried.  more

Voting Question: Should I spend a lot of time looking for scholarships or should I rely on financial aid and a loan?

I don't want any debt after college, but I really don't want to spend time looking for loans. My GPA and SAT scores are good and I'm a little on the poor side, so those might help. However, I feel that it would be much easier and would remove a lot of stress if I just got a lot of financial aid and a loan. What do you suggest that I should do?  more

Resolved Question: What are some good colleges/ universities?

i really want to go to NYU, but i have heard that they do not offer enough scholarship money so that i could afford to attend. what are some other schools that have the same sort of feeling, but are a bit more affordable. i am currently a junior in high school and i live in south carolina. i have a 4.3 weighted GPA. i am in the top 5% of my class. i take almost all AP and Honors classes. i am a member of Interact Club, Spanish Club, National Honors Society, and BETA Club. i am also a cheerleader at my school. i am interested in majoring in psychology, but i am considering business or publishing. i will most likely enter as undecided. i was just hoping for some suggestions for college. i would prefer a very diverse college in a medium to large city (preferably large). i will consider a college in any geographical region. i really need financial aid. i haven't heard about many colleges. what are some good colleges or universities?  more

Resolved Question: I want to attend another college but do not want to send my transcripts from my old college do i have to ?

okay so i have been at community college for almost a year, and obviously didn't do very well and that's why im asking. this semester i was on academic probation for a course last semester, but since i didn't take care of it AND i dropped out of all my classes i am on suspension for spring 09. GREAT...i know! :( i hate this college and i was never interested in it the first place, i just went there cause it was the only option. there for not doing my best. i have never been on financial aid or have never applied either. i have not had any scholarships or grants. can i go to a different community college and NOT give them my transcript and go in as a freshman? cause i want to start fresh! and go to the college i wanted to. if i do not give them my transcript how will they know i went to another school? i realize/know the consequences but i just want to know. but i did give them my transcript will i be accepted for a fall term of 09 with my bad record? correction* i meant "IF i did give them my transcript..." sorry i put "i did"  more

Voting Question: Can a college promise full tuition to a student then not fulfill it's promise?

My daughter signed a contract that promised the program would pay full tuition, books and cover all expenses. Students were told the scholarship would cover all expenses and all money left over would be returned to them in the form of a refund check. However, it only did so the first semester. After that financial aid was used and money had to be begged, borrowed and stolen to cover the cost. No one can answer what happened to the money that the program was said to have to be used. If it wasn't used for the students, where did it go? Can the school be sued for false empty promises and not living up to the contracts (which have disappeared)?  more

Resolved Question: Alternative ways to pay for college?

My parents are intent on making me enlist in the Air Force upon my graduation in June. In a way, I dont mind it. I'l get to serve my country, and get paid. They also pay for your schoolign while youre in, and most of it when youre out. I'll have a place to stay, and a car too. Not so bad...right? But i've always dreamed of going to collge. Right before my mom told me shes making me enlist, I completed a list of 10 schpols that I wanted to attend. I talk to my friends and everyone is talking about college and how great its going to be. Or how great it already is for them. And its like..I want to have a life for once. Ive grown up a military brat. While its nice and secure, theres no real sense of fun and/or freedom. And thats just with me being a kid. As an adult i'll be much more limited in the things I can do in fear of being kicked out. I was really look forwad to some freedom to be myself, and in the military theres no way I can do that. I only plan on staying in for 4 years, then getting out and going to be my bachelors and masters. I'll be 22 or 23 by then. Which is good I supposed. The military looks great on record. But im still not sure if its what I want to do. I know its more so what my parents want me to do, supposedly because of the recession going on. My main problem with college is the fact that I cant pay for it. Its a bit harder for military brats to get scholarships since for some reason people think we're rich. My parents arent going to help, and im working on gettinga job now. But even then, it still wont be enough. I definitely dont want to take out any loans. Im not sure how much financial aid would cover me because my parents make more than enough to send me to the schools I want to go to. I could work while I school, but I dont think id be making enough to really pay for it on time and everything. Then there's ROTC, who offer scholarships for school for sophomores and up in college. But its not guranteed...and I have no past experience in ROTC. So thats not such a good idea for me. The deadlines for 3 of the schools are coming up [they're in CA] on the 20th. Ive already taken my SAT [1530] and ACT [scores still unknown]. Its still possible for me to apply to them all on time if I work hard for the next 2 weeks. Now that youve read that...here are my actual questions. -Do you think I should apply to the schools? -What other ways would you suggest I pay for college, if I do apply and get accepted? If you have any other advice or information, feel free to share it.  more

Resolved Question: Does a Tuition Refund Check count towards FAFSA?

I received a $2500 tuition refund check from my college for the Fall 2008 semester. This was all from federal, state, and scholarship payouts. I deposited the refund into my bank account, and I was wondering if the deposited amount will affect my next FAFSA filing? Does college tuition refund checks count? Do I have to count funds received from financial aid as income or as money in my checking/savings account?  more

Open Question: How to pay for surgery/ treatment... and where to find help?

My mom recently found out that she might have ovarian cancer... and now I'm going to do my part and research as much as I can. However all these websites only talk about what and how to prevent ovarian cancer, but doesn't explain what to do when you DO have it. Both my brother and i are college students and we are going to school b/c we have financial aid, loans, and scholarships. My family do not have money to support us or even themselves. My parents are at the brink of bankruptcy and they just found out they need more money to pay for testing and soon, surgery. I am working three part-time jobs to pay for my loans and credit card debts as a full-time college student, and my brother is just starting college so he has no money or job. My dad works, but he is not given benefits with his full-time job. So pretty much, we need to do our homework... Here is my question: How do I raise money to pay for the testing, surgery, and treatment? Which insurance company has the best coverage with this type of cancer? and what would I be looking for when getting an insurance company? (can you tell I'm new at this? my parents are immigrants so they don't know anything either) thank you in advance for answering my questions :) I live in California, specifically in LA... if this helps...  more

Resolved Question: Can anyone help me find scholarships that apply to studying abroad?

I am currently a student in the US, but I want to study abroad for a year in Ireland. I don't know yet if my financial aid from my school will transfer to whatever program I go in so I was looking for scholarships. I keep on finding scholarships for Irish students wanting to come to America but not the other way around. I am not decided on any particular program yet, still looking into my options, so I'm looking for a scholarship that would ideally be for any student studying abroad. If it helps I specifically want to go to Cork in Ireland and most of my research so far has been through the CEA website. This isn't a question really of if I'm going or not it's a question of how. I really need help financially most likely because my college doesn't have a specific program that would sponsor this, it all has to be done on my own.  more

Resolved Question: is scgsah a good school?

I'm considering going to the south carolina governors school for the arts and humanities and i was wondering if anyone who has experience with that school could tell me a little about what its like to go there. I would be going for dance. It is also kind of expensive. We have enough money to not be considered for financial aid but I was wondering if they have any scholarship opportunities? Thank you for the answers. I will consider your answers in my decision to audition for the school. If you have any good experiences or just things that you like or dislike please comment. I would really like to know if it's worth it before i waste my parents money. Also is ballet the main focus? I really like ballet and want to concentrate on it and that is why i am thinking about going to scgsah.  more

Resolved Question: is it against the religion of Jehovah witnesses to vote?

i work with two of them and they are blaming that they do not want to intervene with government affairs that they don't want to take sides, but if you are a citizen then it is your duty to vote. im sure that they will not deny financial aid or scholarships for school. they are full of b.s. (this is on the person not the religion)  more
