so i just graduated from high school and i'm going to a community college until next year till i (hopefully) get accepted into my dream school. its out of state in california and tutition is around 34 thousand, housing 10 thousand, books and etc few more thousand. I really really really want to go to that school but i have no scholarships and pretty much no money to afford that school. i filled out fafsa and my expected family contribution was 99,999 bucks...so basically i get nothing. The school i want to go to helps by giving a few thousand in aid, and they do have scholarships, but i still need to pay a lot! and i'd rather not be paying off loans for forever. so my question is should i get federal grants- can i even? i've looked around for some but i cant even understand them. how do you find local scholarships- since i dont have a counselor how do i find them? do you no any other ways to get money for school?- like besides work? moreOpen Question: How much of Obamas lies, cheating and theft will liberals stand?
President Obama's college transcripts from Occidental College. Released today, the transcript indicates that Obama, under the name Barry Soetoro, received financial aid as a foreign student from Indonesia as an undergraduate at the school. The transcript was released by Occidental College in compliance with a court order in a suit brought by the group in the Superior Court of California. The transcript shows that Obama (Soetoro) applied for financial aid and was awarded a fellowship for foreign students from the Fulbright Foundation Scholarship program. To qualify for the scholarship, a student must claim foreign citizenship." This is the man now sitting in the oval office that we're talking about above. He is also a lawyer; that is a sworn officer of the courts system, and a member of the Bar that actually taught Constitutional Law in Illinois, before running for the office he now occupies. This immediately brings up a number of direct conflicts of interest that in themselves create several indefensible positions for the fraud that Barack Hussein Obama, formerly Barry Soetoro, truly appears to be. How could Obama the lawyer not know that he took grant money for financial aid, from the Fulbright Foundation that was intended only for foreign citizens? How then to square this with his supposed Naturalized American-citizen status that he claimed in order to run for president? He cannot be both things in the same person; especially not at the same time. Also Obama is a lawyer so how can he excuse himself, from lying under oath, either as a president or as a candidate; not-to-mention deceiving the public as to his actual qualifications for the office he now supposedly holds? moreOpen Question: Grants and Scholarships?
Does anyone have any idea where I can go to find grants and scholarships for people who are collecting unemployment and want to attend college? My husband recently lost his job and is planning to attend Devry we were interested in trying to apply for grants and scholarships for displaced workers. Does anyone have any serious suggestions. Thanks so much. moreOpen Question: I HAVE a cosigner and need an 18,000 loan for college... where is the best place to get an ALTERNATIVE loan?
I need to find a loan for 18,000 or multiple loans to equal 18,000. Where is the best place to go? It will be a certified student loan through my university. But it's still an alternative loan. I already got stafford loans, grants, and scholarships. I need an alternative loan now. Can you help? P.S. Please don't tell me to get a job or to go to a cheaper school. That won't help me very much. I have a job and my school is the best institution for what I want to do. moreOpen Question: Please help!!! My mom is trying to force me to start college now!!?
I'm planning on going to Full Sail University and I was planning on starting in the fall to begin with...but my mom found out about the 30th anniversary scholarship...it'll give me an $8000 grant...the problem is that with all of that I still have to pay for housing (the school doesn't have dorms) and I sill don't have my drivers license because we moved out of state and the DMV down here won't accept my out of state permit so I'd either have to go back home and take my drivers test and get my license or I re-take the whole class over in the state I live in now...neither parents have enough money to afford all of this...and I'm scared that once I get down there I'll be broke!! My mom refuses to let me get a job, and whenever I try to talk to her about going to college next year she doesn't won't to listen to me...she'll criticze me and say how my little sister isn't going to make those mistakes that I'm making with school. And she'll make me feel guilty about it too...Oh and on top of all of this she wants to move to college with me!!! I plan to go back up home and move with my dad, get a job, and start Real-estate school to help me pay for college next year but she isn't listening to me...what should I do??? I'm 18 and I've been trying to explain it to her but she won't listen!!!! moreOpen Question: I need information with grants and scholarships (please read)?
Okay, I am a high school student in Florida, and I plan to get a doctorate in forensic medicine, as a forensic anthropologist. I would like to go to the University of Tennessee, but for out of state students it is more expensive. What I would like is some scholarships/grants that can be used at a multitude of colleges. I already know of Bright Futures, so could anyone help me out? moreOpen Question: What is really involved with going through graduate school?
I have a question that anyone who is currently attending or has attended graduate school may possibly answer: What is really involved with going through graduate school? First, please allow me to explain my situation: I have worked for eleven years as a programmer in New York City, NY until I was laid off two years ago. My skills set is obsolete (I have programmed apps in Visual Foxpro as the front-end with SQL Server as the back-end). I am having an extremely difficult time securing a job in NYC. All of my family and friends are in NYC, so I am not considering moving for an out-of-state job. I have decided to upgrade my skills (Learn C++, Java, Oracle) by enrolling part-time for a Masters degree in Computer Science from the college where I had earned my Bachelors degree. Two years ago, I had gone through a class in C# and VB.Net in a "technical" school but found that the lessons there fell short of what was necessary to pass the rigid Microsoft certification test. I have done some research into what is involved with earning a Masters degree. Aside from attending classes and excelling in tests, it seems that students are required to serve as either a "Teaching Assistant" or a "Research Assistant". How much time (Percentage wise e.g. - 25%?) of the student's overall time is required for this task? I would think that more time is required for graduate level studies than for undergraduate level studies, so I'm not sure how much time being an assistant would take away from valuable study time. Also, do colleges reimburse students for the time they serve as assistants? I realize that I would probably have to find a low paying part-time "Dead-end" job to pay for grad school, so any supplemental income would help. There doesn't seem to be any real financial aid (Grants for which most students can qualify) for grad students, only hard to obtain scholarships. I am going through a very difficult time and if not for the support of my family and friends, I don't know how I would continue to stay sane. Any help that can be offered towards answering my question is greatly appreciated! Thank You! moreOpen Question: Financial Aid - Loans?
I go to UCLA and my summer plans fell through so im thinking about taking summer school. I pay for college 100% through financial aid (grants, scholarships, loans) so I need to apply for financial aid for summer school to cover fees. But I missed the priority deadline and im not sure if ill still be able to recieve any financial aid. If im not able to recieve any directly from UCLA, can i still apply for a stafford or perkins loan on my own to cover the costs? Thank you for the help! moreOpen Question: What kind of grants or scholarships can I get?
I am 25, recently married and a new mother and have finally decided to go to college. Took me long enough! But I would like to go to school for nursing but it will take 3-4 years, requires a Bachelors and I do not think we can afford it. I am a stay at home mom now, but my husband makes $53,000 anually (however last year when I was working as well we had an income of $89,000. We do not have the best credit and I am not sure what my options are. Does anyone have some advice for me, or can anyone direct me to someone (or a company) I can contact to find out if I would qualify for any assistance, grants or scholarships. Thank you!! moreOpen Question: Should I get a student loan to pay living expenses?
I am currently a senior in college and I live in an apartment with a roommate who is my friend. I did have a job but I had to quit because it was interfering with my classes. My mom was paying my expenses for the past 5 months while I am looking for a job. Lately I have not had a lot of luck finding a job due to the economy. She recently told me that she can't continue to pay my rent, etc. because she has stuff to pay for (mortgage, etc.) and she has a lot of debt.My lease is up in two months and I am thinking about telling my friend to find another roommate and just move back with my mom. My mom's house is not too far away but I will have to commute again but I feel that I will miss being close to campus and other things in the city. I was contemplating the option of accepting a federal sub loan in my financial aid package that my college offered. My tuition has been covered since I started college from a minority scholarship. This year I am getting the Pell grant ($950 each semester). I have also been offered a federal work study ($750 each semester). The only thing I have to pay for is books each semester and a parking permit. My rent is $395 a month and I split the other expenses (cable, utilities) with my roommate which equals about $85-95 for me. Food varies at times and I don't pay a lot for gas ($20 and I have a full tank). My cellphone bill is $76 a month. I was thinking about accepting the loan since it will be only for one year but I am concerned about paying it off when I graduate. Also I was thinking about going to grad school and I might have to take out more loans. I am trying to make this decision soon since my lease will end in early August.I also want my mom to be able to pay her expenses and other debt that she has without having to worry about helping me out. I just purchased a new phone and I have a new contract so my phone bill should be a lot cheaper. I would cut the cable and internet but my roommate watches tv a lot and we both use the internet. moreOpen Question: What's the simplest computer languages that a Novice w/NO training or background in computers can learn free?
I want to use my computer to self-teach myself a computer programming language that I can eventually use on my employment resume, but I am a complete computer NOVICE with no computer training and very little knowledge of any one specific program (I don't use my computer except for online computer gaming and things like socializing on places like Facebook or to compose very simple letters on MSWorks' Word Processor). I've heard that some of the free tutorial websites are easier than others to learn from and that you can do it without having to go out and buy books and that you can set your computer up as a practice lab for the things you learn. (Can anyone give me feedback on this or tell me how to do this?) What is the easiest basic or general programming for someone like me to learn that has the best potential to be in demand for employment that I can start off with to get my foot in the door of a job in some type of generalized or basic entry-level programming position of any type? Please DON'T tell me about how I can go to a community college to learn it because I have been unemployed for over 2 yrs now (due to getting sick with cancer that is now in full remission) and about how there are student loans, grants and scholarships that I may be able to apply for and/or qualify for, because at my age (45), I really don't want to mess with any of that and I would rather try to learn it on my own using my home computer and a good tutorial website that can teach me on a step-by-step basis. Any answers are appreciated. moreOpen Question: college money for children?

hey, just graduated from high school, im 18 on saturday. my ma n dad wont shut up about college. i want to go to school sometime soon, but i have no idea what for. I've always been interested in cars. drawing them, driving them, talking about them, being by them, how they work, fixing them u name it. I've looked into being an electrician, auto tech, carpenter, the Navy, etc. I would enjoy fixing cars for a living, but I'm not sure if there will be any work there for me for one thing, for another, I dont know with these hybrids coming out, things may all be changing soon. I'd be spending a LOT of money on school, and I wouldn't be making a lot when i got out. I need to get in school asap, my ma n dad dont stop naggin me. what would you do? Also, how do i find out about grants and scholarships i may be eligible for? moreResolved Question: help with paying for college?
i really need help getting grants and scholarships for college please help me find some. i'm going to the art institute and i'm majoring in graphic design . if you need any additional info please tell me. moreResolved Question: Should I pursue a college education or pursue a really good career opportunity?
I am 18 years old, I have just completed high school and am in the process of enrolling at my local university. I worked extremely hard in high school to earn good grades and to earn as many scholarships and grants that I could possibly receive. Even though I was going to school as a full time student, I decided to take a full time job (against my parents wishes) at my neighborhood supermarket as a box boy. Within six months of working there I was promoted to a grocery clerk and was given a generous raise. A year later I was promoted again and was given another very generous raise. I was told by my district manager that after I had finished high school that they would offer me a salary position and that I would start off making about 50 thousand a year. Although I am really stoked for college, I have always loved working a 9-5 job over going to school. I do really well in school, but I excel more at my current job. I know that the backlash from my parents will be brutal, and the decision to work instead of going to college is not favored by most people that I talk to. If I don't make it with my company and wait too long, some of my scholarships will no longer be available to me, and then I will have to pay out of pocket for schooling. If I make it far in my company, I can make very good money and if I chose to go to college later in life I could afford to pay my tuition. moreOpen Question: Anyone know of some good scholarships or grants?

Ok. I wanna go away for college; I'll be at least four hours away from my mom's house, which I think is not bad. My mom doesn't have any money, but she'll try her best to support me. my parents are separated. I know for sure my dad won't support in terms of finance, but I really wanna go away. furthermore I wasn't born here, I'd like to explore this country. I was thinking( after trying to get as many scholarships and grants I can) about taking out loans. I know I'll be in deep debt, but it won't really matter since I'll be a pharmacist. Pharmacists make 80K 90K a year, so I'll be able to pay back my loans. I don't know what to do. should I listen to my mom and stay at home, or follow my dreams and go away expecting to be in debt after eight years of school? moreVoting Question: So Obama had a scholarship or grant to LA college from indonesia as a foreign student?

Ok so I finally got my award letter and I must say its pretty cool the way they lay it all out. But here's my problem. My COA for my school is $11000, and that includes fees/tuition, books, transportation, personal expenses, and transportation. My Pell grant and Stafford loan will pay for about $9,000 dollars. I have another scholarship + loan that is $3500 dollars and that should cover all of my COA.But as you can see, I'm already over the limit (COA). I know I'll get a refund but I REALLY need a computer that will last my 4 years of college (and Is compatible with my Major). I need it BEFORE school starts, because my computer desktop motherboard finally died. In case anyone was wondering, I am typing this on my friends MacBook. Ok here is what i NEED http://store.apple.com/us-hed/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook_pro?mco=MTE4NDY The 17 inch macbook, + educational pricing = $2560. Keep in Mind that I need it for graphics intense applications for school that includes Movie, Sound, and Picture Editing, Data Processing (Programming Like C++, Java, and Web Creation Based Applications) etc. Mostly website and video processing stuff. I have an extra vista OS and Microsoft Word so I don't have to pay for that (praise GOD, and bootcamp ftw!). I was wondering if anyone with experience in this matter, can tell me if I can acquire such a device, and can I get it before school starts. I know I cant keep using my friends notebook for long, he starts college the same day I do so he'll need it lol. Any help would be very much appreciated! moreOpen Question: Community college or private college?
I just graduated from high school a month ago and my family still can't decide where to send me for further education. My plans are to pursue a masters (at the least) in psychology and possibly get a bachelors in photography or the closest title to it. In high school I always took challenging classes and finished with an honors diploma and a 3.5 GPA. I did pretty well on my ACT and SAT and feel good about my AP tests. The private college offered me a 9k per year academic scholarship a 1,500 per year grant and I auditioned for and recieved a 3k renewable vocal scholarship. With this aid my family would only be left to pay about 11k a year. I voiced my willingness to work a job to further help with the cost. My family makes about 70k a year and we are very free with our spending with no large existing debt so I don't see how we wouldn't be able to afford this even if we chose to forgo loans. Also the college I'm looking at offers me the option to triple major and recieve three degrees in four years, as well as a self designed major in art with a concentration on photography. I would be living at home still and I wouldn't be attenting this college to be with friends as I'm fairly withdrawn socially. The class sizes are all small since very few are admitted each year (I think there were like 150 freshmen last year.) This college has made me feel very welcome since the beginning and after visiting multiple times I believe it to be a good fit. My concern with starting at a community college and transfering is that I just don't see my family being any more willing to pay the admission price after two years of cc than they are now especially since it will be more expensive without the scholarship and grant money I have now. Should I go to community college to save money now and deal with the extra high costs later as well as lose my ability to triple major, or should I deal with the medium cost for all four years and take the more challenging academic path? moreVoting Question: Where can I find grants or scholarships for NYC college students? *Desperate*?
Most scholarships require a certain GPA. Are there any grants or scholarships for current college students that have finished their first year with a GPA less than 3.0? moreVoting Question: Help! College student taxes and FAFSA questions?
I'm so confused and am not sure whether my son was supposed to file taxes (he didn't) and if what we claimed on our FAFSA app. is correct or not. Now, the university is asking for more detailed info. that I've had to try to scrounge up. What to list? Here's our situation - He gets TOPS tuition assistance, received a Pell Grant, and his university gave him money to attend school abroad (the other university contributed to this amount also) last summer, and again this spring semester. He earned a small amount from actual work. He is a dependent, and I am disabled and not required to file taxes. I have some cognitive issues, so this is really difficult. He was in Canada, was very confused about whether to file or not, very stressed out there, and did not. I looked thru his storage unit and found W2's and realized he didn't need to file taxes due to his income. We live in different cities here and I was not aware of what he got money for or how much exactly last year. A lot of things were paid directly to the schools. When he returned to the US he had a 1098-T form in his PO box I just learned about. I filled out the FAFSA while he was gone, and didn't list any student aid funds. I don't think TOPS or Pell have to be, is that right? I have now gotten paperwork where the university selects people for certification or whatever, where they ask you more detailed info. Now that my son is here we're both wondering more about if he has to list assistance he got to go to Canada. They ask if he received any grants or scholarships. His friend said he didn't claim it, and that 'that was not a scholarship'. Then what was it? Is ANY money given a student considered a 'scholarship' even if a specific dept at a school that has it's own fund to give students? (This is the French dept.) The IRS and other sites repeatedly say 'it depends on the type of grant or scholarship' but doesn't elaborate. The school nor French professor was of no help. We have no breakdown on amounts- how much was tuition, fees (it's in French!) and room and board. Does all this have to be exact? Since he didn't file taxes, but if we learn he was supposed to, how do we proceed? If we are required to list the funds, whichever ones, for last year does that mean a student does not get financial aid for the coming year- how is that calculated? Hope this makes some sense! Thanks so much for reading. moreVoting Question: Are there any flight training scholarships available to me?

Hey Guys, Gals, and those who are in between! Im about to attend Columbia State CC (In TN) in fall of 09 and I was wondering if anyone can give me an estimate on my refund from my Stafford Loan, Hope Scholarship, and Pell Grant. I also want to know whats the eta on receiving a refund If I acquire one . I talked to my financial Officer, she didn't give me a "straight" answer because she was so "busy" (Summer classes began this week ). Cost of attendance, tuition and fees are. $1375.50/year. Semester Hours are 106.00 per hour. I plan on being a full time student (15 hours hopefully) Books and all that jazz will come to play probably will cost me 800-1000 a year. Ok so Here is what I will receive: My EFC IS 0 btw! Pell Grant: 2009-10 = $5,350 Hope Scholarship: $2000/year + Aspire award $1500 towards the HOPE (Do I get that per semester?) Stafford Loan. Unsubsidized and Subsidized >>> $5,500 Now I am issuing a loan because I need the funds to go for a car. This is crucial, because of obvious reasons to GET to College. Overall (again my questions are): More than likely, my scholarship + award will cover the cost of attendance, tuition, fees and classes (books maybe...). I was wondering if my Pell Grant return and my Stafford Loan return will be reduced due to all of the things listed being "covered". I am on a tight budget and is in desperate need of a car (and computer but car goes first). I calculated my return should be around $5500 but I honestly didn't know... Can someone please give me a straight, educated, calculated, long (if led) answer. Thank You! moreVoting Question: Financial assistance?

i'm jumping from a regular english class to honors brit lit for junoir year and unless i rewrite my essay and score an A (i got a B) then she won't let me enter brit lit so can anyone plz help me correct my essay to make it A material. thank you very much! Debt is one of the most formidable words in the English language for many college students aside from ‘pop quiz’ and public speaking. More than 47% of college students throughout the U.S are burdened by debt that can go up to the 10,000-dollar range and most do not have enough money to pay it off. Instead of going through the trouble of debt, college students should start out the right way by saving their money in the bank instead of dealing with student loans, grants, and scholarships. Saving money for college consists of opening a savings account and putting around 25 to 35% of money earned or given into the savings account to pay for tuition in college. If most people paid for college this way we would not have to deal with piles of student debt, which could affect not just the student but the school as well which needs a specific amount of money to function. This is why saving money for college is an ingenious idea. From the four principle ways people pay their tuition; scholarships, grants, and student loans are the least dependable and hardest to maintain. To some people, scholarships seem like the best route because it pays for most and sometimes even all of tuition, but it seems like luck to depend on them because one does not know if they will receive a scholarship. Even then, scholarships usually pay for books and tuition but they do not take care of personal needs such as food, shelter, and clothing. So if someone saves money in the bank and happens to earn a scholarship, the money in the bank can be used for their personal needs. Another way people pay for tuition is by student loans. When everything else fails, people turn to the loan industry where students are sometimes refused or do not receive enough money to meet their needs. Students that do receive loans, however, end up in a considerable of debt by the time they graduate college. The average student graduates with more than $25,000 in debt, which is more than twice the average cost of tuition. Then the student has to balance a job and schoolwork to pay back the loans as well as tuition, rent, and other personal needs. Grants are yet another way to pay for college but probably the worst to depend on. Grants do not pay for all tuition and they are very limited. Usually people receive grants if their parents make less than the average middle class salary, so middle class student usually will have difficulty receiving a grant. Since three of the four ways to pay for tuition are eliminated, that leaves saving money for college. Though it is proven that saving money for college is the smartest way to pay tuition, most people think it is too late to start saving money for college. If a person start saving around $200 a month for the next 3 years they will end up with around $7,200. On top of that, if they have a part-time job in high school they can save about 15% to 20% of what they make in their savings account and accumulate from around 10 to 15,000 dollars, which is above the average cost of tuition. Other people think that because of increasing tuition fees, it is impossible to save up enough money to pay everything off. About 54% of students who started saving late stated that they were able to pay off their tuition with no problems, so it is possible to save enough money. Although most people think they can depend on scholarships, grants, and student loans to pay for tuition are proven wrong and should instead turn to student savings. When people save money they become less stressed in school and do not go through a financial crisis. It is important to think about how to pay for tuition because it is easier to focus in college with no money issues. If most people remember to save money for college they will realize how much easier it is and will end up having a greater college experience. moreResolved Question: Help me pay for College tuition..
