Open Question: Air Force Officer Questions?

Has anyone been able to experience the benefits of becoming a military officer once out of college? Did it seem to be more rewarding then a civilian job coulg have been? I'm graduating in may with a marketing degree and have a back groung in health care. Also, does anyone know the the maximum amount for tuition reimbursment I went to a private university and have lots of loans! Thanks for any help!  more

Open Question: Desperate for a second chance at going back to school and denied private student loans, don't have a cosigner.?

I went to a private college for almost two years when I realized I was wasting tons of money on Bible credits I would never use, so I decided to take a year off and figure out a great school to go to with a Music Business major. I set my sights on The Institute of Production and Recording in Minneapolis, MN. Everything has been going great...except for my student loans. I have about half of tuition covered my Stafford loans the only thing is, the school isn't an eligible school for several student loan companies. My adviser has been giving me several different ways to get private loans and I have been denied by three places, and twice with a co-signer. My parents have the worst credit right now due to their specific jobs that aren't doing well in this economy. I fell a little behind on my student loan payments from my past private school but have communicated things with them and have set up small payments each month, but I am still being denied these private loans due to my credit score. Please help, I couldn't be more desperate in finding a way to pay for my tuition and this school. Classes start July 27th and I have been working non-stop trying to find new ways of getting there. Thanks!  more

Resolved Question: If I go to a public university would say make arangements if I am crippled?

I want to apply to public universities in New England, but since I am crippled ( I can walk fine I just always limp and can get soar feet on very long walks, but I never get tired in my high school. I walk more on my toes then heel) Would the university make thing more accesible, like put me in a dorm near my classes, or what if my classes are really far? Am I screwed? Also, reading the reviews of some of these public universities, it says they don't give a s*** about people and that stuff but idk. I really don't want to make my dad pay for a private tuition even though he would get a loan for it. All I really need is something that is not to far of a walk from my major classes. I wouldn't take the bus you mentioned because I get embarrassed and feel that no one would want to hang around with that kid, or that he is a retard and I feel that I don't fit in with the others. I'm the type that will rather deal with the pain that that, but as long as I can make sure I have the options if i need it I will be happy. Esp in the winter, with the snow and ice. The university I am trying my best to get into is Umass Amherst.  more

Resolved Question: Best loan company for a fast disbursement for private student loan?

I was going through college while working to pay for my monthly rent and other expenses. Recently, I haven't been able to work as much to pay for my monthly expenses. I don't have any outstanding debts or loans (my parents and I worked out a deal where they would pay for tuition if I would pay for rent). My need: a PRIVATE student loan that will pay out very quickly (ASAP, one month max) so I don't have to drain my savings account to pay for rent? My current monthly living expenses are roughly $1,200/ month and I make about $1,300 a month. I don't want to live off my paycheck month to month. Ideally, I would still like to pay monthly on my loan to cut down on the cost of repayment after school (in about 5 years...). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Additional info: $3,000 in Government loans approved Still short about $12,000 for the year Excellent credit with a cosigner  more

Resolved Question: I need to pay for tuition... any suggestions?

Ok. So here is the delma. I have no way of getting private loans. I already am receiving the maximum of financial aid. I got a 8000 dollar scholarship. I am still short. I can't get a co-signer for a private loan. Scholarships deadlines are mostly over. I need approximately 5k by 07/09, to pay for the first tuition enrollment period at Full Sail University. I am losing my hair thinking about this. It will cost me 2k just to move to Florida from California and I can't afford my 06 4'Runner truck payments. I will only be able to come up with about 2k before I move. I AM STUCK! any body got any suggestions?  more

Voting Question: Can't get financial aid, HELP!?

My school doesnt offer federal loans so i tried to look into private loans and was told they won't work with private loan companies either. I'm at a loss, I havent been able to find a private loan that doesn't have an "eligible school" list, and my school is never on them. Resolved Question: College tuition question.?

I'm going to Ohio University in the fall as an incoming freshman. I filled out my FAFSA early on, but I didn't apply to the school until April because I was planning on going to another school, but something happened and private school just wasn't affordable. Anyway, I think me waiting so long to apply was the reason I didn't recieve any aid at all from the school (I'll be calling later to find out why exactly). So, my mother was telling me to take out as many loans as I could that had decent interest rates just for the first year. It's about $16,000 give or take to go there and I plan on applying for at least $10,000. Someone told me that next year, since I'll be in my second year and I know for a fact I'll be going there, I could stand a better chance of getting aid from the school itself outside of loans. Is that true? Or, will I have to take out $10,000 a year every year for four years? I'm on every scholarship website I can find applying for them and I'm really, really hoping to find a job on campus in the cafeteria or library or something to take off some of the pressure. Will that help? (My mom makes too much to get any federal aid which is totally unfair) Are there any loans in particular (outside of federal ones) I should be looking at? Her credit score isn't the best, and I'll only be 17 when I start school so I don't have an credit.  more

Resolved Question: Dilemma about my International Relations major?

So, I was accepted to University of San Diego (a very good private school-costing $35,000 for 1 year) but am only eligible for very high-interest loans. My plans after getting my B.A. are to possibly work for the embassy, but absolutely go onto Med School-maybe even an overseas Med School. The thing is, that I'm very scared to pay so much money for only receiving a B.A., so I was looking and found much cheaper universities in Massachusetts even considering the out-of-state tuition (that way I can live somewhere I've never lived before, and at the same time get a degree without worrying about such a huge debt afterward). I thought that would be a great idea because I could live somewhere else and save $23,000 for the year. The ONLY problem I'm having with this is, that there are 2 schools in Mass that offer somewhat of what I'm looking for-but my options with these schools are to a.) Major in what they call "Independent Study: International Relations" (since they don't offer IR as an established degree)-so basically it's like doing their minor in IR, but adding courses to it which would be related to that field, and making it a B.A. or.... option b.) To major in Sociology or Political Sci and minor in International relations. Essentially, I don't know which one would be better for what I want to do in life..and I don't know which degree would look better in general. Thank you  more

Resolved Question: My school doesn't offer federal student loans...?

I'm going to a community college that doesn't offer federal loans. I'm going to get a pell grant that will cover most of tuition but I need help with living expenses, books, computer, etc. I would get a job to make ends meet, but I'm required to have a 2 yr internship for my program, that is likely to be unpaid. My parents don't have very good credit and are wary to sign a loan in their name. Is there anything other than private loans with horribly high interest rates?  more

Voting Question: How do I get a Student Loan?

I need to get a private student loan to pay the tuition of my first year in college. However, I am in a dilemma as I am a High School Senior and my parents have bad credit. They won't be able to cosign, and I can't get a loan on my own. Federal aid is maxed out and we had an EFC near $13,000. I am trying for scholarships, but I can't go on a whim all the way to September just to find out that I don't have enough. Please tell me how to get a Private Loan in such a situation.  more

Resolved Question: Which University should I attend?

I got accepted to University of San Diego, but found out it's going to be $35,000 for one year (and i qualify for $29,000 in loans, which needs a cosigner because of my bad credit). After being accepted there, I started thinking about the possibility of going to the University of Massachusetts in Boston, which is $21,000 for out-of-state tuition. USD is private and UMass is public, but which one has the better reputation and prestige? I was also looking at Bridgewater State College in Mass, which would only be $12,500 for out-of-state tuition. i would really like to live back east, but don't want to relocate and turn down USD if it means I would just be moving to go down in reputation (college-wise). Thank you And NOT UCSD, I was accepted to USD.  more

Voting Question: Public music colleges for guitar?

I've noticed that most colleges that teach guitar are expensive and private. Are there any public colleges that can teach guitar at the same level without the high tuition fees? Resolved Question: I'm having trouble finding a loan, can you help?

I'm going to attend a career technical college (private school) for a LVN program. Tuition is $24,000. They can currently not accept federal loans so I've been looking for private loans but the banks want the name of the school but that school isn't listed. Any banks that you may recommend. Ahhh what to do???? This is a fairly new college and they are currently waiting to be approved for federal loans. They used to have SallieMae. They're trying to get together with them again.  more

Voting Question: i need help with tuition payments?

ok so i was originally attending college, but i had to take a semester off because i couldn't come up with my remaining balance. i still owe my school about 7,000 dollars and i've tried to get a private loan from a bank to pay it off but all the co signers i use don't have good enough credit. i have no idea where to turn right now and i really really need pay them back so i can go back to school and continue my education. does anyone know how i can pay off my remaining balance? do u think that fafsa can cover remaining balances, or does it just give you money for the current year but not past balances?  more

Resolved Question: What type of attorney do I look for?

I'm planning on suing this private school I attended last year. The tuition cost me over $25,000 borrowed from a private school loan institution. The school signed an agreement form stating that they will return $23,000 within 30 days of receipt of the letter. It's been over 5 months now, since the last time I've heard from them. What sad about this is, I had to start making payments 8 months ago ($350/mo.) for the money I borrowed to pay this school. I sent the school letters (via certified mail) in which some cases will get returned to me because they refuse to accept it. I had even called them several times and I have been ignored and hung up on. What should I do? If I want to proceed with a lawsuit, what kind of attorney should I be looking for? Need some help!  more

Resolved Question: What is your opinion moral problem with these parents claiming that we have a responsibility to fix their mis?

Until his final year of high school, Filipe fit right in. A strong student at one of Boston's best schools, he excelled in sports and won a scholarship to state colleges because of his high test scores. He liked rock 'n' roll, video games, and the Red Sox. He spoke English like an American, with barely a hint of an accent. Then he graduated, and all the doors closed. He couldn't claim his scholarship, a state college charged him the pricey nonresident tuition, and financial aid was unavailable to him. The reason: Filipe is an illegal immigrant. Across America, Filipe and students like him are welcomed into the public school system by a narrow 1982 Supreme Court ruling that guarantees them a basic education, regardless of their immigration status. After graduation, for those who want to attend college, the rules dramatically change. The story that is rarely told is what happens to them next. Filipe got a loan, enrolled in college, and sank $46,000 into debt. He took this semester off to work at a gym and pay down the debt. When he couldn't provide a Social Security number, he lost his job. Now, he is broke, unemployed, and subject to deportation to Brazil, after spending nearly half his life in the United States. "I never thought I'd be here," the 20-year-old said recently, speaking on the condition that his last name not be used. "It's a hard place to be." Every year as many as 65,000 undocumented students like him graduate from high school nationwide, including hundreds in Massachusetts, according to the National Immigration Law Center in Washington. Ten states, including California and Texas, allow students to pay resident tuition and continue their studies, while several states actively prohibit it, including South Carolina. Private colleges set their own rules; some grant students private scholarships, and others do not. http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2009/05/17/from_in_crowd_to_out/?page=1 What is your opinion a moral problem with these parents claiming that we have a responsibility to fix their mistakes ?  more

Resolved Question: A question about out-of-state tuition?

For the past two years, I have been attending a private college, but since it is just a two-year institution, I'm transferring now to a different college. I've already made a decision on where to go, and it's another private university. Only this time, it's out of my home state. When I tell people I know where I am going, though, I am often faced with people saying, "oh goodness, you'll have to pay out-of-state tuition." But I've always been under the impression that out-of-state tuition really only dramatically affects public institution students? I know there are still local-only/in-state-student-only scholarships and loans offered to private university students, but tuition seems unbiased toward in-state versus out-of-state students. So my question! Does the term out-of-state tuition affect private university students as much as it does public university students? (Note: I've already been accepted to this college, enrolled, and will be paying tuition soon - I'm just curious about this issue.)  more

Resolved Question: Over Extended in Financial Aid?

Read a question earlier about a student wondering if going to a private school and in debt 60k was worth it, the replies are not to borrow over the course of the years your first years salary. I just finished my freshman year, 3.73 GPA first semester, 3.0 second semester. I have received Pell Grant, a State Academic Grant based on maintaining a 3.0 GPA, and State Fee money from HS Grades per semester as long as GPA is 2.5 or greater. I do not attend a private college, I attend a University in the State, however, I have had to take out subsidized and unsubsidized Stafford loans @ 6 and 6.5% interest rate to cover my remaining room and board. The cost of attendance is around $18k a year(tuition, housing, meal plan, book fees). My parents only make $30K yearly and can not contribute a great deal towards my education. I do work during the summer, but it is of not great substance to pay towards college, its enough to cover clothing, gas, book fees. I'm carrying a full load on courses and feel if I work on the side during school, my grades will suffer from it, thus losing grants that depend on my GPA. Should I quit now and hope for the best to just pay back what I have borrowed this first year, or should I withdraw and go to a local tech school and not pursue my major? (Which the answers to the other question was if your a doctor you will be fine, but not if your job will pay less in your field, I'm a International Business Major. Your advice please, I desperately want to get an education and pursue my field at my current school, but don't want to be saddled with a debt that I could not afford to live on my own due to the monthly repayments. This is just mind boggling that I may graduate only to get a $45K year job in the beginning at best yet be in debt $50-$60K. I have applied for scholarships, and have not been granted a single one yet, GPA in HS weighted was 3.4. I have applied again after first semester of 3.73 and only have been notified that I'm a semi-finalist, and had to turn in tax forms and transcripts, no other word on the others.  more

Voting Question: Just filled out my FASFA and my EFC is 0. What does this mean?

I understand basically it mean that the government does not expect my family to be able to put any money towards my tuition (which my single mom cannot, besides some gas money). I'm planning on enrolling in a community college in Florida (I am a resident) for a 2 year AA in engineering. Can you get the pell grant at a community college? If the grants do not cover my entire expenses do you think it will be easy for me to get a student loan based on my FASFA results? I'm not hoping for an entirely 'free-ride', although I wouldn't mind it. I'm almost positive I will have to take out student loans, but with my EFC so low, will this help me in securing student loans? BTW I'm 21 and my credit is horrible right now (8,000 in debt with car and credit card). Can they hold my credit against me for federal student loans or private student loans? I am really hoping I can get into some sort of community college, my dreams would be crushed if I couldn't pay for it :/.  more

Resolved Question: How do I fill in the financial aid gap?

I have received a Pell grant , a subsidized and an unsubsidized student loan, and it's still not enough to cover my tuition and room and board, let alone miscellaneous expenses. My parents are deceased and I'm going to a University in Texas, so I have no one to cosign a private loan for me. Also, I've applied for some scholarships, but because I've had to fund my education thus far on my own, working two jobs and going to school full time, it hasn't left me much time for extracurricular activities, sports, or club affiliations (the things a lot of scholarships use as criteria) also, I had a rough time last semester with my Calculus class and it dropped my GPA down to a 2.9, so I'm like a .1 point from gettting some academic scholarships. Is there ANYTHING else I can do? I really owe it to my parents (and myself) to finish school. It's a promise I made to my deceased mother. Also, I'm single so no spousal support either.  more

Voting Question: My EFC is 0, but what if I have a bad credit history?

I plan on attending the Illinois Institute of Art - Chicago. The tuition is about 30,000 per year. I was able to file as independent because I was in foster care at the age of 13. (New question in the "independent or "dependent" section.) I have been reading that the EFC DOES NOT mean that I have a "free ride". Which is fine because I plan on working during school anyway. I've also been doing scholarships. (Anyone have a list of scholarships that do NOT require you to be a current high school or college student? It's really hard to find a scholarship without those requirements.) But I'm afraid that I won't get enough aid to cover the 30,000 tuition. I tried to apply for a loan the other day and my application was rejected because of my credit history. (I've been jobless and couldnt afford to pay bills) ILIA - Chicago isnt like a...university with THOUSANDS of students who REALLY need aid. Small, private school. Will that help me? Also, what should I expect to be receiving if my credit history doesn't matter when it comes to financial aid? I know I asked 40 different questions but I've been trying to go to school for almost 2 years and I was never financially able to go until now. And I don't want to be disappointed again... Thanks.  more

Resolved Question: Are there any kinds of student loans besides federal loans where I don't have to pay until I graduate?

I am worried that I won't be able to pay my full college tuition. My parents make too much money for me to qualify for any grants and I am worried they will not get the parent plus loan. I am 85% sure they will not. Are there any private loans out there where I don't pay until I graduate? I plan on going to medical school so I am not worried about paying them off after I graduate. Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.  more

Resolved Question: Need private student loan without a co-signer!?

I am 21 years old and still in college. Stupidly I have racked up some credit card debt and I wanted to get a student loan to pay them off because the loans have lower interest rates and I can defer until I get out of school. However, my parents tried to co-sign for me and they both got denied. I can't ask anyone else as being a co-signer is a huge responsibility. I have fair credit because I always pay my minimum payments on time but my balances are too high so my credit score won't go up. I have been looking for a job for the past 6 months but it is next to impossible considering my schedule with classes and only being able to work part time. I get Federal Stafford loans and they pay for my tuition, books, and some of my rent but that's about it. Also, my parents won't get a PLUS loan as they would have to pay it back themselves immediately. I am out of options and this is my last resort. Please help!  more

Voting Question: Financing options for law enforcement/peace/police officer academy?

I live in San Antonio, Texas and I only have 3 options in my area for becoming a peace officer: San Antonio Police Department (SAPD), AACOG Peace Officer Academy, and San Antonio College Law Enforcement Academy. I just want to work at an area municipality or suburb, school district, San Antonio Park Police, or a college. In order to get training with SAPD, I would have to be employed by them and that requires good credit which I don't have. AACOG is a private academy where you have to pay money out of pocket; but the cost of attending is close to $3,000 after tuition, books, supplies, and uniforms. San Antonio College also has an academy which is only $346-480 per level depending on the level. The Texas Public Education Grant (TPEG) only pays up to 50% of the tuition. I can afford half of the tuition; but I can't afford to buy books, uniforms, and gear for training. I know that all career training loans are credit based and I have no one to co-sign. Are there any other financing options out there for career training? Should I ask for sponsorship from one of the smaller police departments in my area since they don't have their own academies? I'm pretty sure that federal government grants and student loans do not cover career training because I called San Antonio College, which is a community college, and they said TPEG was the only financial aid available through them after filling out a FAFSA. I just called them again, and they said that the grant was the only thing available.  more

Resolved Question: How do I get loans to go to school without a cosigner?

After the completion of Fafsa and such, I only need $11,000 or so to pay for my upcoming freshmen year of college tuition. My parents are unwilling to sign loans for me to go and I can't guarantee that the private scholarships I've applied for will be enough to cover the remaining costs. Is there anyway at only 17 I can get loans myself or come up with the money before my freshmen year begins in august. Please help.  more

Resolved Question: college tuition--- lost!?

I live in kentucky now and I am a senior in high school. I really want to go to a private college in Oklahoma. I am joining the coast guard reserves and that will pay for a small amount. after financial aid the school will give me and the money I get from coast guard I will still owe 9,000$ a year. are there any programs -like someone mentioned one where if u are going to become a teacher, which i intend to do, you get half tuition free- or anything like that that I could get so I wouldnt have to get so much out with loans. Also my mom is from Oklahoma so do I qualify for Oklahomas Promise or is that only if I graduate in OK. Voting Question: Parental Pride? What to do to deserve it?

This is a question that is completely open to opinion, but I am just curious. Let's say Jane is a high school student, very active in academic teams, specifically in speech and debate, excellent grades, lots of awards at graduation, and gets accepted at a private, accredited college. Jane goes off to college the following semester and finds that the school, while physically beautiful, is entirely the opposite of what she had expected. The classes are not worth the $45,000 tuition (even though her parents are paying for half) and whats more, the scholarship that she had been awarded for the speech and debate program didn't look promising for the next year because the program was entirely absorbed in itself and demanded her own grades and happiness be sacrificed for the betterment of the team. Moreover, Jane does not like the party lifestyle and watches all of her friends get addicted to drugs and become heavy drinkers nearly overnight. So, Jane comes back home that summer and decides she doesn't want to go to that school the next year. The speech and debate was simply too cut-throat and draining, and she was on her own to pay for the schooling. At $45,000 a year, student loans would be insane, not to mention Jane's parents wouldn't be assisting her again. Her parents kick her out upon arrival, and she gets a full-time job and moves out on her own. Within one week of moving out, the parents are complaining that Jane just up and left and didn't know how good she had it. Jane continues to go to school full-time online at an accredited university as well as working full-time, getting a new and better paying job in a government position, all still under the age of twenty. Jane's parents are now telling the rest of the family members that there is no hope in her. She is a shame to the family and they only invite her over to tell her how stupid she was and how big of a mistake she is making in her life. Is Jane's life really so horrible? Shouldn't the parents be proud that Jane is not a party animal, has a full-time, government job, and is still going to college full-time with plans to graduate and go on to graduate school? Sorry for the hypothetical here, but its easier writing the story from another perspective than first-person. At any rate, were the choices made so inexcusable? Wouldn't work history PLUS school put me in a better place come graduation?  more

Resolved Question: Private student loans, direct-to-student?

Hi guys, I need to take out a private loan for about 20k for tuition, books, housing, new laptop, etc. Only problem is all of the websites and banks that offer private student loans send them directly to the financial aid office at my school, and my school does not disburse the money until August (3 months from now) and I need the money ASAP. Anyone know any reliable websites that send the money directly to the student or other solutions? Thanks!  more

Voting Question: student loan question?

ok im planning on going to cedarville and their tuition has moved up to 29,000/year. i have gotten 13,000 in grants. Now I have to get student loans somehow. The school has offered me two loans that are subsidized and two others that aren't. I really dont have the money to pay interest every month. Is it possible to get loans through banks for my tuition and use some of it for books? Also can I get loans by the year rather than all at once? My bank offers stafford loans which aren't enough for my tuition and also private loans. The amount from cedarville wont cover the amount left for school. so ill have to borrow at least five thousand or more from somewhere else. Which are better? I dont know what loans to take and what to do about getting them.  more

Resolved Question: School that doesn't accept federal financial aid?

I'm looking into Long Island University and the program I'm looking into is a certificate and doesn't accept federal financial aid. What should I do? I think I might need to take out a private loan, but not sure how much I can borrow. I would need money to cover the tuition AND living expenses, which for NYC is quite expensive. Help!  more

Resolved Question: Student loans/ grants... how many of them can I get?

So I just finished filling out FAFSA and my EFC was only $42. My family had a rough year financially. It said I am put up for verification and I might be eligible for the Pell Grant. The tuition for my school is $7,000 a year. Now if I do get the Pell Grant and maybe one student loan that would probably cover it. But I don't have a car and will require one living down there for school/ work. Now I know the loans can be used for transportation purposes. My question is, even though the grant and just one gov't loan will cover my tuition can I still get another gov't loan to buy a car? I want to stay away from private loans. The only two gov't loans I'm aware of are the Stafford and Perkins. If I don't get a car I won't be able to go to school and I can't afford one out of pocket. I'd appreciate any advice.  more

Resolved Question: Do you agree with Barack Obama when he says that college is too expensive? Why or why not?

Lets face it, college can be very expensive to students who want to achieve a Bachelor's degree. Students have to pay for tuition, books, academic fees and room and board and for their personal expenses, they need to pay for food, gasoline and clothing. During the 2008 United States Presidential Election, I heard Barack Obama often say that college is too expensive and that he met students that could not afford college. In your opinion, do you agree with Obama that college is too expensive? Why or why not? I personally do not agree with Obama that college is too expensive. The reason why college is expensive is for two reasons. First, you have parents who send their child or children to colleges they cannot afford. For example, parents want to send their child to colleges that are research institutions or private christian colleges knowing that all they can afford is a four year public state university of public state college. Second, you have students who want to attend certain colleges knowing that they are going to be put on student loans and are going to be in massive debt after they graduate. These colleges are usually four year universities or private colleges that are know academically for their name. I believe that it doesn't matter where you attend college or where you have your degree from, as long as you get experience that what counts later on in life. I have some information on why Obama believes college is to expensive that you can read; http://www.tri-cityherald.com/letters/story/451629.html http://www.statejournal.com/story.cfm?func=viewstory&storyid=42856 I have some information on why Obama believes college is to expensive that you can read; http://www.tri-cityherald.com/letters/story/451629.html http://www.statejournal.com/story.cfm?func=viewstory&storyid=42856 I have some information on why Obama believes college is to expensive that you can read; http://www.tri-cityherald.com/letters/story/451629.html http://www.statejournal.com/story.cfm?func=viewstory&storyid=42856 Before I chose a Best Answer, I enjoyed reading all the answers given and the viewpoints each participant gave about if they agree with President Obama on his views that college is too expensive.  more

Resolved Question: How do I get Private Student Loan money when it is sent to the school?

I began expanding my non-existing college funds by applying for FAFSA. Although I will be receiving almost full tuition, I still need money for other expenses (books, laptop, etc). I have several questions regarding how to go about getting a private student loan. With the economy being so unreliable at the moment, most loan companies only offer certified student loans, meaning that the school verifies that you are not recieving more money than needed for one year of college, and the money goes directly to them. Are there any non-certified loans still being offered? How do I know how much money the school will aprove? If I apply for more than allowed, do I have to reapply for a lower amount, or will I be offered less money? When the funds are sent to the college, when do I recieve them? I know I am asking alot, but I am kind of lost at the moment, and really need help!  more

Resolved Question: Can my bank do this...?

Here's the deal... I've been banking with Citibank for 4 years now. I have a checking, savings and recently a credit card with them. All my accounts are in good standing with them. I'm in my last year of college and I need a private student loan of $ 4000 to finish paying off this semester. Graduating this may. And since all my accounts are with citibank, I would like to keep it that way because I love Citibank. I've never had a private student loan so I don't know exactly how this works. The credit card that I have with citibank is a year and 2 months old. Never had any late payments or anything. This is the only credit card own. They recently up my credit limit from $4000 to $5400. I owe $1200 on the credit card. I was wondering if they could turn my credit limit in a loan?.....I recently applied for a student loan and I got denied, sallie mae said about my length of credit history being insufficient. I have a credit score of 727(transunion) 733 (experian) 720(equifax). I have no negative items such as late payments, delinquencies etc...I just want to know if I go into a branch if they could turn my available credit limit into a loan. i don't want to charge my tuition to my credit card because the interest rate is 11.24%, I think that is too much. Also, the loan that my school recommend with citibank, requires a minimum income of $15,000. I make about 12, 000, so I don't qualify for that. Do you think that they could override that and make an exception for me?... I really think the problem lies in my credit report. My one and only account hasn't been open long enough I'm asking because I don't want to go into the bank and feel foolish Thanks for taking the time to read and answer my question.  more

Voting Question: Deciding between two schools?! Help, please.?

I've been accepted to John Carroll University which is a small liberal arts college in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. It's a good school, but upon further reading on their site, the tuition payment plan is whacked. To reside on campus, my mom and I would be responsible for slightly over $1,180 a month for the 10 months of the academic term.To commute, it'd be somewhere in the ballpark of $858 even with the little money the school's given me because I do not qualify for any federal aid. And I don't want to take out many or any loans if I don't have to. I'll still be a minor when I start school in the fall (17), and the loans would have to be in my mother's name and she has bad credit so the interest may be high and I would rather not have my mom in even more debt for the sake of my education. I've recently started hearing some rumblings from people who once went to the school or attend there now and I don't like what I'm hearing. Basically, they say the school isn't known much outside of our neighboring states which could hinder you when you're looking for a job or applying to graduate school. The other school is a public school in Athen, Ohio. It's Ohio University and because of recent developments, I applied there yesterday and I'd missed most, if not all of the priority deadlines, but I was assured by 2 people that work in the Undergraduate Admissions office that there were slots left, but I'd have to take whatever money they had left if I was accepted. But, I do not know if I will get accepte, though. I've gone on websites that tell you your percentages of getting in and they say I should be able to on my grades and I know my ACT score was higher than most (they listed the average on their site), but my GPA is lower by 2 tenths of a point and I'm worried I won't get in and would have to reapply for spring and I don't want to do that. And if I do get in, I'd have to live on campus and that costs about $17,000 for room and board, tuition and books, less than half of what it'd cost at the first school. So, should I hold out for the public university and hope to get in or just go to the private school that's going to be a killer to our pockets? Personally, I'd rather go to the public university because it's bigger and more known even outside of the neighboring states of Ohio. But, I don't know what to do. Advice? Please? I'm really worried I won't be able to go to school this fall and I REALLY want to. And is 2 tenths of a point from the average GPA bad?  more

Resolved Question: Are There Any (Student) Private Loan Lenders Available Anymore?

I'm going into my senior year at college and I desperately need to secure an student private loan to cover the rest of the costs of my tuition, books, and living expenses. 2 years ago, I took out a loan with Next Student....which was very successful. Since I only borrowed a minimal amount, I was told I had roughly 10 thousand dollars still available if I needed to borrow again in the future. Well, that time has come, and they are NO longer funding loans at this time due to the "economy" and the bad financial markets. Not just this lender, but SEVERAL are saying the same thing on their websites. Are there any left??  more

Resolved Question: where can I find a list of lenders for a private student loan?

I am a grad student in San Francisco and am trying to get funding for a study abroad program that I am going to this summer. the total cost break down includes: All lodging while in Italy All transportation while in Italy Roundtrip Airfare – SFO – Rome All day trips and excursions including bus transportation All train fares All museum fees Student Information Packet Classroom Fees ISIC student card ( International student discount card) Liability Insurance Coverage for each student Temporary medical insurance and 24 hour emergency care assistance and with tuition, everything comes out to $15,920 I tried to go through Sallie Mae (whom I have my other student loans with) but my finacial advisor will only approve about 1/2 the requested amount because they think it is "irresponsable" to use education money on plane tickets and and medical insurance (even though it is for education purposes) Yes, it sounds rediculous to me too and I have tried to fight it, but they are standing firm. So I tried going through Wells Fargo. They have a student loan that does not need to be certified by the school and it comes directly to the student. However, the denied me becasue of my already high outstanding student loan amounts. So my question is, are there any other lenders out there that have a private student loan, that does NOT need to be certified through the school - and that will approve you even if you have an already high balence of student loans? Thank you!  more

Resolved Question: Paying for College on my own?

Is it possible for me to pay for college on my own. I am a junior and I don't think I would qualify for FAFSA because my parents are illegal, I can't contact my father and my mom can't help because of low income. (I am a legal citizen) I was planning to attend a private university and live on campus but I guess is going to be impossible. Are there loans that can pay tuition and how much can I borrow? Can I get up to $40,000 or is that too much? What do you suggest? Thank you very much.  more

Resolved Question: How do I cover the balance of my college tuition for my first year in the fall?

I am going to attend college this fall, but even with my financial aid package I do not know if I will be able to cover all the costs. I am putting in for scholarships, but as you should know there are no guarantees. I can't blindly put in for scholarships when I know I cannot necessarily depend on them. If I don't win any or enough them I'm screwed and it will be too late to do anything. I am basically asking what is a good way to cover college costs outside of a college's financial aid package. Is it possible to get a private loan without a cosigner with a strong credit score? PLUS loans are out of the question, so what are my options? I need details! If you solved this problem then please tell me how (how to cover college costs excluding a college's financial aid package; about $16,000?). Although I do thank Suddenly Human for "answering my question", unfortunately the response was inadequate. In plain terms, if I don't find a way to get $16,000 before the fall I am in trouble. Tell me a way to get financing, not to go to a school I can afford. That's not an option, and it doesn't help me. JustAnswering, what I wouldn't mind getting a loan, I don't know how I can. Please read my second paragragh. Don't I need a cosigner? I'm asking how I can get a loan or anything for that matter?  more

Resolved Question: Will this student loan strategy work?

I currently have about 45k in federal student loan debt and about 20k in private student loan debt, and am considering enrolling in the IBR ( income based repayment plan) that becomes law this July. Under this law, I can take all federally backed loans ( subsidized and unsubsidized) and consolidate them, and then pay 10%-15% of my income for 25 years, when any remaining balance is forgiven. ( I am aware of the tax implications in year 25, and am not concerned; read on) I am starting law school this fall. With law school, I am eligible to take out stafford loans for tuition, along with grad PLUS loans for living expenses. This will mean a refund after tuition and books of around 8k. I plan to take out the maximum I can until my private school loans and consumer debts are paid off, and after I pass the bar, consolidate under the IBR and pay 10-15% of my income for 25 years. This way, no matter how much I borrow, I can never pay more than 10-15% of my income on student loan payments! This of great relief to me, as it no longer makes me fearful of the future in the way I once was... Before anyone gives me grief about "forking it onto the government," understand that I could care less. The govt. has been more than eager to bailout banks, insurance companies, and auto manufacturers, so why not take my piece of the pie? I don't believe people should have to pay for a higher education if they want one. This is a principle that I strongly believe in, and any statements that attempts to undermine that premise will be met with my not taking you seriously/ ignoring your post... I simply want to know: Is this a good strategy? Lauren F. : Good answer. However, I see this strategy as hedge against the possibility of earning such a high income. While I can be hopeful for such a high income, (six figures) in my region I believe starting wages are closer to 60-80k yearly. Obviously, at the end of it all I can choose to repay however I want, be it through the IBR or through more traditional means... Does my strategy make more sense considering these assumptions?  more

Resolved Question: How the hell am I going to fund my education?

OK, so Im attending a university in Chicago and I am a pre-med/Bio major. I've completely run out of ideas on how to come up with the remainder of my tuition and living expenses. I've received all the financial aid, grants, and scholarships that I think I am eligible for and I am still 12,000 dollars short. I've already received stafford loans and the perkins loan. I have Absolutely nobody in my family whom can cosign for me on a loan because they all have bad credit. I've applied for private loans on my own from six different institutions and they have all been denied. I feel so overwhelmed and I just don't know where to go for help. I have even entertained the ideas of stripping or selling my eggs for money and I'm so sad that this is what it has come down to. I've spent days trying to figure out on paper how I could possibly make 12,000 dollars in the next four months and I think for me it's physically impossible..... I'm angry that I am such a focused and dedicated student.... but all it really comes down tois money. Well with all of that said, any suggestions?????  more

Resolved Question: Student loan options/advice?

Ok, so I'm an out-of-state student living on campus at the Fashion Institute of Technology. I'm almost done with my first year and am working towards my bachelor's degree. I just wanted to see if I'm going in the right direction with student loans before I take out another loan for a possible summer class, which would cost $1600 for the summer semester, and a summer abroad program next year, which would be $5,400 (tuition, flight, everything). I didn't receive much federal aid this year, which was pathetically $5,500 altogether. So I had to take out private loans costing $11,500 the first semester and $8000 this semester with Citibank, totaling to nearly $20,000, which means my average yearly cost is $25,000. My parents earn more than $100,000 a year (together) but have huge mortgages to pay, and I'm an interior design student (I can possibly get a good paying job if I work in NYC after I graduate). My parents don't want to do a Parents Plus Loan at all. My sister is in college at the same time and her costs are on the same level as mine. Are there other options outside of private loans? I'd be taking $20,000 from private lenders every year. Am I doing this right?  more

Resolved Question: An auto loan to improve credit?

I'm currently 22 and am a senior in college (although I'm going for one more year and then possibly grad school). I would like the possibility of being able to buy a house in two to three years, and therefore am looking for ways to improve my credit. I opened a credit card ~9 months ago with a $3,000 limit. Currently the limit on it is $4,500, all payments have been on time, and the balance is my previous month's purchases (around $100). In reading, many people recommend having either one or two revolving credit lines, and one or two fixed credit lines, for a total of three lines of credit. My credit card is one revolving credit line. I'm curious if taking out say a four year auto loan and making payments on time would substantially improve my credit score three years from now. The loan amount would likely be $7,000 to $8,000, giving monthly payments of around or under $200, which I can realistically afford. I've been paying my own college tuition and rent since the second semester of my freshman year of college, so I somewhat have of a grasp of my expenses. On a side-note, I'm under the impression that I would be stuck with the interest rate I initially receive. I could refinance, but wouldn't that close out the line of credit and begin a new line of credit, potentially lowering my score? The follow-up questions are, would it be in my best interest to open a second credit card for additional feedback on my credit history? Also, I currently have a good amount of student loans, all of which are in deferment until I graduate (if I attend grad school, they will remain in deferment through that period). Do these loans count towards my credit score as fixed lines of credit? Some are federally-funded, while others are through private institutions. For what it's worth, Credit Karma reported my credit score at 722 as of a week ago, and TransUnion reported it at 764.  more

Resolved Question: What options are available to pay for college without a co-signer for private student loans?

I have been in school for just over two years now. I am receiving my federal aid, but it isn't enough to cover my entire tuition each year. My parents had been co-signing my private loans since I started school, but since the start of this economic crisis, they are no longer able to do it. I imagine some of the responses will be for me to get a job and make up the difference on my own, however, my husband is in the military, we are stationed on the west coast while our family resides on the east coast. I am a stay at home mom of two young school aged boys. The cost of childcare here would exceed my monthly take home pay and not leave anything left over to cover school expenses. Other than the endless, no guarantee, scholarship and grant search, does anyone have any other suggestions on ways to qualify for private education loans with no co-signer? Thanks in advance!  more
