Perkins Loan For College Questions and Answers

Open Question: Financial Aid - Loans?

I go to UCLA and my summer plans fell through so im thinking about taking summer school. I pay for college 100% through financial aid (grants, scholarships, loans) so I need to apply for financial aid for summer school to cover fees. But I missed the priority deadline and im not sure if ill still be able to recieve any financial aid. If im not able to recieve any directly from UCLA, can i still apply for a stafford or perkins loan on my own to cover the costs? Thank you for the help!  more

I need student loans because im poor, what do i want a perkins loan? i need i need to fill out a form, i need the website for that as well, thanks for any assistance.  more

Resolved Question: Who do I pay a student loan back to?

hello, i'm a senior in college and i'm wondering how i'll be paying back the student loans i took out during my fours years at college. i have taken out several different kinds (federal perkins, unsubsidized, subsidized, mefa, etc), and I was wondering who will be sending the bills? Does my school combine them all into one big bill, or am I sent all separate bills for each loan from their respectful companies? Any answers will certainly be helpful, i'm very nervous about paying back my huge loans!  more

Resolved Question: What is the best type of federal loan I can get to pay for college?

I've heard of the Perkins Loan, Stafford Loan, and thos PLUS loans, but what is best for undergraduates, and which offers the most, (like the Stafford loans give $5500)? I would like to recieve a little more than that. If there are other federal loans that I should look into, I'd appreciate what you can give me. Oh, and can I take out more than one loan?  more

Resolved Question: I will be attending COLLEGE ,,, is this GOOD DEBT?

I was offered a Perkins loan of 2,200 with a 5% fixed interest rate for 3 academic terms... one term I'll get about 700 and so on.. By the end of graduation... I will owe approximately 7,200 back. BUT The only problem with that is I see many friends who will be graduating with 25,000 debt and their 6 month grace period is over and they have NO JOBS and Currently in todays economy... no jobs for millions of graduating seniors!! What should I do? Advice?  more

Resolved Question: I'm confused! Need financial aid help!?

I went to one college, graduated, and am applying to another school - again as an undergraduate. I got a ton of financial aid from the first school - perkins loan, pell grant, plus loan, unsubsidized loans, and subsidized loans (which might be the perkins?), as well as scholarships. The total of unsub loans is 27,000-ish, i don't know the plus (it was just added to my sisters and my parents are generously paying it off), and the sub loan was like 5000 or something (the payment is 43 dollars, so it can't have been too much). Does this mean I've used up all the financial aid i can have for undergraduate schooling? I can no longer take out a plus loan (or I refuse because my parents have paid enough for my learning :), but I can't figure out - and no school employee can tell me- if the gov. loans... reset for each degree or school... or do you only get to use fed loans once, then they're gone? I'm so confused! Will there be financial aid options available to me? I know for certain that private bank loans are not an option - we tried last semester for the first school and no one was loaning money :) if anyone has any info on how this works i would LOVE to know! Thanks for the info so far! I just filled out and submitted fafsa. I'm hoping that because I have a decent gpa (3.4) from a MUCH BETTER school than the one to which I'm applying (from tier 1 to tier 3) and that I'm certain I qualify as far, far below the poverty line that they'll be quite merciful in granting me funds, even though I'm well beyond the priority deadline! ah! its still so confusing! i only have max $5000 of subsidized loans, but 27,000 of unsubsidized which i got as a dependent. i'm now an independent, so how does that affect financial aid availability? there should be a way to figure all of this out BEFORE applying to schools and paying all those application fees. thanks to all anyway!  more

Resolved Question: Need help deciding what to accept in Financial Aid Package?

I recently got accepted into college, and now comes the financial aid package. I received the package below. Aid Year Summary Award Description Offered Federal Pell Grant 5,200.00 Federal Suppl Educ Opp Grant 2,000.00 Tuition Remission Grant UG O/S 9,100.00 Carl Perkins Federal Loan 1,600.00 Federal Direct Subsidized Ln 1 3,500.00 Federal Direct Unsubsidizd Ln1 2,000.00 Parent (PLUS) Loan Eligibility 14,676.00 Undergrad Fed Work-Study 1,800.00 Aid Year Totals 39,876.00 The total cost of tuition is 36,000. Obviously I'd accept the grants and work study for a total of $18,100.00. That still leaves $17,900 though. Now here comes the questions. What terms apply to the Perkins loan, and parents (plus) loans? How much of the loans should I accept? Maybe the Perkins and the subsidized loan? Or the subsidized and 5,000 of the parent plus loan, I really have no idea. I'm the first in my family to go to college, and my parents speak little english, so I'm on my own here. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.  more

Resolved Question: Use stafford loan for summer class at community college?

I got a lot of grants and scholarships this year, the only loan I took was the Perkins loan. Now, I did not do to good in 2 of my classes (discovered I had ADD). To be able to keep my life scholarship, I have to have 30 hours by the end of summer. This year, I was given the option to use my Stafford loan too, but I did not because everything was paid for. Now I need money for summer school at a community college, I talked to my college's financial aid department, and they said that I could use the Stafford loan to pay for summer school, but I would have to go to summer school at the college I am CURRENTLY attending. I want to go to a community college because the classes will be alot cheaper, and I could go home for the summer. Is it true that I have to use my Stafford loan at my college, or can I use it at a community college over the summer? I am confused....also, do they give the money directly to the school, because I was planning on trying to take a couple of CLEP's. Also, do the stafford loans roll over...if I dont use it this year, can I use 2 stafford loans next year? Thanks for any info you can give me!  more

Resolved Question: Is there a way that I can change my Stafford loans to Perkins loans?

I'm currently an undergraduate at Lycoming College, studying Philosophy and Psychology. I've been thinking ahead and planning my career after I get my degree and I've come to consider the option of joining the Peace Corps. In my research I found that they can not only defer payment, but they offer partial cancellation of Perkins loans for up to 70% of the loan over four years of service. My question is whether or not I can somehow change my loans from Stafford to Perkins before I graduate in order to take advantage of this benefit.  more

Resolved Question: Should I have trouble getting approved for an auto loan?

I am looking to purchase a car from a friend pretty quickly because he cant afford payments after he got laid off and just needs to get rid of the car. The bluebook value is 14000, but he only has 8000 left to be paid on it. He wants me to get the loan in my name but im worried because i used to have like 3000 in debt and didnt always pay them on time because i wasnt making much money at all (2 credit cards and a college perkins loan). With late fees and interest the amount of debt i had stayed around 3000 and even got up to 3500 around christmas. I just joined the military and got out of boot camp last month and paid off all but 800 and i got the payments current on the one I have left. Should I have trouble getting an auto loan for the 8000 preferrably from USAA of Penfed? well i know i could pay it now because im making 4 times what i was at my old job and living in government leased housing, so i have no bills other than car insurance and cell phone. The only reason I couldnt make the payments before is because i could barely pay rent some months. the loan would be for 8000.... 14000 was just the bluebook value im paying 1500 on the car, but im paying that straight to the buyer. The milage on the car is 25000 and its a 2005 dodge neon srt-4 sorry i meant to say im paying that straight to the seller.  more

Resolved Question: Financial aid package: average?

Resolved Question: Which student loan should I choose? Perkins or Stafford?

I am thinking about going back to school to earn my associates degree in business management since my employer offers tuition reimbursment. Since the economy is still in the hole, even attending the local community college would put me in the hole financially if I had to pay for my education up front since reimbursement is only applied at the end of the class when final grades are issued. So I am considering a student loan to help pay for my education and then as the courses and grades are completed, apply the reimbursement funds to the repayment of the loan. It sounds brillant but now I am confused as to which student loan would work best in this situation. I know I have to apply for the FAFSA and that will determine which I qualify for, but if I qualify for both, which is better? I don't want to have to pay for any of it if my employer's tuition reimbursement covers it- but unfortunately they do not cover interest. Please only respond if you are truly knowledgeable about both types of loans or have been in a similar situation. Thanks!  more

Resolved Question: Bankruptcy as a college Student?

I'm a college student who currently receives federal student aid through Stafford/Perkins loans, etc. I'm considering filing for bankruptcy due to some severe credit card debt. If I file for bankruptcy, does that affect my eligibility for student loans? I'm an ADULT college student (age 31) who has gone back to college. Unfortunately, I have a lot of credit card debt. I get Stafford/Perkins loans, and I was wondering, if I file for bankruptcy, will I lose those loans?  more

Resolved Question: I need a student loan but I cannot get it.?

The only thing our school does is Pell Grants. Yes the school is accredited because all the neighboring 4-year colleges accept its credits. So I cannot get a Stafford or Perkins Loan (they are starting that in Fall of 2009). No Private Lender has this college on its list so I cannot go there what should I do. I'm getting frustrated and about to drop out and re-registar in Fall if I cannot get a loan.  more

Resolved Question: why would my old college refuse to accept repayment, but defer me to the collection agency who is hounding me?

I attended a college for 2 yrs 23 yrs ago, then joined the military with the understanding my student loan was deferred until I left the military. I eventually paid what I thought was the entire balance encompassing DOE loans, as well as what are called 'Perkins' now. However, more than 5 years after repayment, I am now being contacted almost daily by a collection agency. I disputed the debt with them stating that I paid it years ago, and offered my paid check as proof. The argued that this is a different loan, and sent me a 20-yr old blacked out copy of something I signed as a 17-yr old. I called the college, and they found what I was referring to, called it a Perkins loan, and said they couldn't help, that I needed to deal with the collection agency. Any suggestions? I hate this because I did pay what I was told by the US DOE was owed. The college even VERIFIED that when a loan goes into default (which apparently happened before my signed agreement was put into effect after joining the military), that all monies owed are referred to US DOE for recollection.  more

Voting Question: College loans, how do I pay them back?

I took out a few loans to try out college, and have come to the decision that it's not for me, at least not right now. I took out these loans with the impression that me paying them back would be postponed until a certain date after I graduate. I am considering dropping out of college, and by doing so am afraid I will have to start paying back these loans immediately. I took out the following loans: Perkins Loan Direct Sub Stafford Loan Parent Direct PLUS Loan The parent PLUS loan I am in the process of paying off right now anyways, but I would just need help with how I'm supposed to pay of the other two. Resolved Question: Perkins loan cancellation for Medical technologist?

I just graduated from college and am starting to look at repaying student loans. I noticed that with Perkins loan that you can have them canceled if you work as a nurse or in a medical technician field, one being a Medical technologist. Has anyoen had experience with this? and will they actually cancel the whole thing? I am a medical technologist, and feel like this is just too good to be true as I have $10,000 in perkins. Voting Question: Worried about loans for college...?

I am a sophomore in college. My stepfather has co signed for my loans for the past year and a half. To make a long story short, I did something to piss him off and now he isn't going to cosign for me. My mom cant sign for me because she doesnt make enough, and I dont think my real dad can sign either because he fialed bankruptcy a few years back. I dont know what to do! My parents didnt save a dime for me for school...I am living 100% off of loans right now. I really dont want to have to take a semester off from school just because I cant get a loan. I find it totally stupid that you have to have a cosigner. I mean why cant they just make you sign something that says they can come arrest you or something if you dont pay the loans back? It isnt my fault that my parents can't sign, and I dont feel I should be punished for it. I know there are lots of people out there in the same situation i'm sure. Anyway, where can I get a loan without a cosigner other than a Stafford Loan or Perkins Loan kind of thing? Please help! Thanks!  more

Resolved Question: When a college says that it will eliminate loans for low-income students, does that include stafford loans?

In other words, if a college eliminates loans for a student, does that mean the student will not have to take out stafford, perkins or other federally subsidized loans? Are they getting a free ride? Thanks!  more

Resolved Question: filed an answer response to complaint, Now what?

I am being sued for a college perkins loan from 17 years ago. I question if this is a "federal" loan or not. I did call dept of edu and they have no record of any loan in my name. I also question whether or not the school has already sold off the loan. Anyway, I have filed my pro se answer response within the 20 days and notified the attorney as well. but nearly 2 months have passed and nothing has proceeded. I have contacted the court and they have told me nothing more than the last thing is my answer. I don't want to miss any procedurals that could get me out of this. Is there something I can do? or do I just sit back and wait? I have had MANY collection agency contact me about this over the years. this is the first that actually filed something. It is in Indiana, filed in my local County Superior court. I did read through the local rules but did not really see anything that looked like info I was looking for. (of course I may not even know what I was looking at)  more

Resolved Question: which loan is better the Federal Direct Subsidized Loan to meet need or the Federal Perkins Loan?

these are the terms William D. Ford Federal Direct Subsidized Loan to meet need : The William D. Resolved Question: Where should I get a private student loan?

I'm going into my junior year of college and for the first time I have to take out a private loan to cover the rest of my tuition. I've already taken out the Stafford (and I'm going to take the unsubsidized 2000 extra that is new this year) and the Perkins (which is only 500, can I get more??). So now I need 3000-3500 more depending on how much I make this summer. So who would be the best lender to go to. I want someone who is easy to work with and is as upfront as possible, so past experiences would be helpful. Also what is a good interest rate for a private loan? Right now, I believe the federal loan rates are between 6-7%. Thanks in advance  more

Resolved Question: How to Negotiate Debt That's Not on My Credit Report?

I'm having trouble finding an answer to my specific question. I have recently been made aware (through a collection agency) that I still owe $300 for a Perkins Loan from when I graduated college in 1988. They now want $671 for this. I know that this is 20 years old, but student loans don't go away. I'd like to offer to pay the collector, with the specification that they don't report this to the credit bureaus (this has never appeared on any of my reports). Should I offer them less money? How do I word this? Can anybody point me to a sample letter that addresses this? Also, since it is a 20-year-old debt, what can they do besides get a judgment against me, and is it worth it to them for such a small amount of money? Thanks! Del  more

Voting Question: Federal Direct Parent Loan Approval?

Background: I plan to be a freshman at the University of Washington. I'm an out-of-state student from Illinois. I received the following financial aid: Federal Pell Grant $4731 Federal Supplemental Grant $4000 Federal Perkins Student Loan $3000 Federal Work Study Program $3300 Federal Direct Sub Stafford Loan $3500 Federal Direct Parent Loan $17,265 My father and I are very concerned about the Federal Direct Parent Loan. When I graduate from the university, my father will be in his 60s, retiring. His credit score is not very good as a result of various financial issues relating to illnesses, divorce and family issues. Will the Federal Direct Parent Loan be denied? It seems very unfair to me, seeing that the University of Washington offered it to me. Throughout my college search process in high school we were told that the financial aid packages from universities were worry-free. Please advise me, I'm rather upset :(  more

Will I get those for the college I am going to go to in the fall (I sent them my FAFSA info a few months ago but I wasn't planning on attending then) or was there a deadline for federal/state aid? Resolved Question: Student Loans Repayment?

Hello, I have 3 students loans that I have accrued throughout my college career. I recently graduated and have begun thinking of repayment options. Two of the loans are government loans, and one is private, Stafford Loan, Perkins Loan, and NJ Class loan respectively. I was wondering what the best option was for repaying i.e. loan consolidation or paying each loan separately. The Perkins I would not include in consolidation as it experiences a fixed rate of approx. 4%. I was thinking it might be possible to take out a regular bank loan (especially with these low interest rates) and use the proceeds to pay back all my loans and only have to worry about this new bank loan. Does anyone know if that is possible? Thanks very much in advance.  more

Resolved Question: Financial Aid package change?

Hey, I'm attending a University in NYC in the fall. I've already paid my deposits for tuition and housing. With all of my financial aid, all I need a loan for is housing. My sister also attends a college in NYC and were talking about finding an apartment together. So my first question is: will student loans (Perkins, Stafford, private) cover off campus housing? Two, will my financial aid package change since I'm not living in the residence halls, but will be paying for my OWN apartment, (not living with parents). I know my Pell grant should stay the same. But I got a grant from the school and an academic award from the school which I'm concerned about. -Thank you  more

Resolved Question: Financial Aid Myths?

I see several questions about Financial Aid that really seem to come out of left field. So I hope this helps - 1. Your first step, in receiving FA is to fill out your FAFSA (www.fafsa.ed.gov) 2. Giving someone your EFC will not allow them to tell you what you will be receiving in Aid. It just helps narrow the gap. They also need to know your dependency status, grade level, amount already borrowed, and available limited funds for your school (Perkins, FSEOG, etc) 3. A Professional Judgment will almost always be rejected unless you can show substantiated evidence you qualify. Not liking mommy or daddy does not work 4. Loans MUST be paid back. And the Government will not hesitate to collect that debt if you choose to blow it off. 5. Several questions you may have, have probably already been asked and answered accurately, so search the resolved questions before posting. 6. Found-1 is my new hero FAO's are happy to help you, but take some initiative. College is for adults. In regard to #2 - This person will probably be your FAO on campus, and no one else. And just FYI, you get your 5 points back when you award best answer :-)  more

Resolved Question: Why did I have to complete exit counselling for a Perkins loan?

I graduated from college in June 2007. I had performed exit counseling for Direct Loans which I had taken out. I did not take out any Perkins loans. A few months later I order transcripts for Law Schools. This week I tried to order transcripts again, and there was a hold on my account. I called the school and they said it was because I needed to do exit counseling for Perkins loans. I went to the web page and completed exit counseling. The summary page did not show me as having any Perkins loans. Why did I have to fill this out? If I had Perkins loans, why didn't they alert me to do exit counseling when I graduated like they did for the Direct Loans? Recently, I have reason to believe that some people have my personal information, and may be trying to commit identity theft. Could this have possibly been the result of an attempt to take out a loan under my name?  more

Voting Question: My EFC went up bad! I don't know if I'll be able to go to school next year.?

So I'm gonna be attending RPI for the last time (senior year), and the tuition plus everything else is going to be 50k in 2008-2009. My EFC used to be 8k for the past three years, but now it went up 31k because my dad got pensions from his old job. This means that my need will be between 20k-18k. I have merit scholarships that cover 20k, but I'm not sure if they used them to cover my need because they were awarded for merit not for need. I'm just afraid that I will lose my Perkins loans, subsidized Stafford loans and workstudy. MY dad told me that this last year he will not help me pay for college, so I don't know if there's anything i can do. THANKS  more

Resolved Question: Can a University not release transcripts if loan is not paid off in full?

I went into collections on a Perkins loan from 01'.The university that I was attending wouldn't release my transcripts until I paid the loan back. The lender and I came to an agreement and the lender is satisfied that I have met the agreement. The lender is sending the university a letter explaining our agreement and also that I have met it and am not longer in default or collection status, but the loan is not paid off. Can the university demand that the loan be totally paid off before they will release my transcripts so that I may attend a different college?  more

I guess I am just craying about the reality that I am facing but some schools just keep squeezing money out of your pocket so much. I have B.S and I am done with my school since 2006 and I had enrolled in M.S program and I have gotten out of that because of Financial reasons. NOW MY school is Mailing a letter to me from something called ACS services and telling me that there is a $5000.00 amount I had taken out in my 1st (FIRST) year of college in 2003. .... I need to pay that back ..and they sent me WHOLE bunch of letters with crazy information that doesn't make sense .. Organization that I am paying the money to is ACS (ACS is a biling service which works for Massachusettes Commonwealth dept. ) so pretty much ... MASS governement hired ACS to collect money .... They are saying that it wasn't a GRANT it was an interest free loan .... This really pisses me off (from year 2003 come onnn !! ) its not like i don't have other stafford, perkins and sallie mae :(  more

Voting Question: financial aid problems help!!?

so next year i plan on attending Montana state university and found out that only 8,000 will be covered with loans, and scholarships and stuff and the cost being of going to school there totaling around 28,000 even though the max. amount my parents will be able to pay is around 6 grand the school is asking my parents to cover a 20,000 dollar loan being completely unrealistic but the only other way of letting me go to college there for one year (at least before i establish residency making my tuition fee's a lot! less.) right now I am bent on the fact that i want to go there and really don't wanna be stuck at home any longer so if you guys know any ways that i could be set up with other scholarships, or loans (besides the perkins, stafford subsidized, federal plus loan for parents, and federal work study), or anything to help me get to school there next fall (except grants because the middle class aren't eligible for them) it means alot if you guys can help me out, thank you  more
